Why Celtic should beat Rangers to the signature of Nick Powell

According to a report in the Scottish Sun, Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers are set to battle it out for the signature of Wigan’s attacking midfielder Nick Powell. While the Gers plan to match the offer made by their Old Firm rivals, the Hoops are trying to sign the player on a pre-contract.

The former Manchester United wonderkid is a free agent this summer, however, he can talk to clubs outside of England to agree on a possible deal. Other clubs – namely RB Leipzig and Brighton are also keeping close tabs on him (h/t Scottish Sun).

But either rival from Scotland looks favourites to sign Powell from the Championship. Here’s why Celtic should beat Rangers to the signature of the 24-year-old:

Celtic could enhance their front line further

After signing Timothy Weah, Oliver Burke and Vakoun Issouf Bayo, the former two being on loan, Celtic have significantly enhanced the quality of their forward line this month.

It was done rather as a necessity after they sold Moussa Dembele very late in the summer window and had no time to replace him. The issues with Leigh Griffiths means the Hoops were down to a single option up front.

Now, to further elevate the quality in the final third, getting Nick Powell from Wigan would be perfect. The 24-year-old is predominantly an attacking midfielder but he can play as a second striker and as a sole striker for the team.

Since Weah is here only on loan and is expected to be back to PSG in the summer, Celtic would get a permanent solution for the support striker role by getting the former Manchester United kid.

Talking about some his attributes, Powell is pretty at dribbling in tight areas and creating space for himself in the final third. He possesses a sharp eye for threading key passes towards the goal, and never shies away from a taking shot from around the box when time and space are available.

He has scored four goals and supplied four assists in 18 league appearances this season, which is a pretty decent return in a struggling Wigan team. Furthermore, the 24-year-old is pretty good in the air, winning aerial duels at the rate of 3.2. (Whoscored.com)

From Celtic’s point of view, Powell would be a great addition come next season. He has the propensities to be a regular starter for Brendan Rodgers’ team for the years to come.
