Celtic FC opinion: Hoops should sign Lawrence Shankland

Wales Online has revealed that Celtic, Swansea City, Rangers and Sunderland are all interested in a move for Lawrence Shankland. The 23-year-old striker has been in exceptional form this season, scoring 31 goals in 32 appearances in the Scottish League Two, also known as the Championship.

Not only that, Shankland has created 8 goals so far, which means that he has outdone every striker at every team that is interested in him. Not the tallest centre-forward around but at 6 feet, Shankland has the best of both worlds.

Not only is he fast enough to outpace his marker but the 23-year-old is more than capable of holding his own in a physical battle. Many may think that his relatively average height may cause a few problems aerially but thanks to his physicality and tenacity, he wins his fair share of headers.

Furthermore, Lawrence Shankland has been a model professional and is not to give up all that easily, with the Scottish striker being released by Aberdeen after nearly five years with the club.

However, his talent was so evident that Ayr United FC gave him a chance, and he grabbed it with both hands from the very start.

In his first season, Shankland finished with 27 goals and 16 assists, a phenomenal record for a striker and one that few expected him to repeat. This season, he is on course to destroy that record, with 31 goals and 8 assists in 32 games this season, failing to score in just 13 games so far this season.

It’s for these reasons that Celtic should get the 23-year-old striker. At the moment, the Hoops do have a ten-point lead over Rangers, but losing Brendan Rodgers may prove to hurt them. Not to mention, the club only has three bonafide forwards and Timothy Weah on loan.

But out of the three stars, only Odsonne Edouard has managed to shine with 13 goals to his name, while the other three have struggled, including Weah. This is a massive problem that the Hoops have and one the next manager needs to fix.

Conclusion

While Lawrence Shankland has been absolutely killing it in the Scottish second tier, there is little doubt if the 23-year-old can do the same in the Premiership. A talented striker, he seems ready for a step up and it’s a move that Celtic really have to make.
