3 Worst Signings Of The 2015-16 Season Featuring Manchester United And Liverpool Stars

Share

It has been a roller coaster ride in this year’s Barclays Premier League. Quite deservedly, Leicester City are crowned the champions of England and the rest of the ‘Big Guns’ finished with an average point tally in their hand.

A lot of transfer took place before the start of the 2015-16 season and many of them were supposed to take their side to a different level. The London and Manchester clubs cracked the bank to secure the services of some top quality players, but the sides failed to acquire even a single trophy this season (United still has FA cup to play for).

The season took a U-turn and all the favours were shifted to the extremely unlikely teams. With many new signings did a great job for the mid table teams, many of them showed the worst side of their play. Players like Dimitri Payet, Kante, Anthony Martial lived more than their expectations.

Here are the 3 worst signings of this season’s Premier League-

Christian Benteke-

The second most expensive transfer for Liverpool never had that game changing impact he previously had. He signed for Liverpool on 22 July 2015 and was expected to replace the legacy Luis Suarez. The Belgian center forward was considered as one of the best in the league while his time at Aston Villa.

The 25-year-old goal poacher dipped his form badly after joining the reds and eventually lost his position in Jürgen Klopp’s plans. Benteke has scored just 9 goals this season in the Premier league, and is considered as the 3rd choice center forward. His fellow countryman Divock Origi has found the place in team’s starting eleven ahead of him, but Benteke has not.

He may leave the club at the end of the season, and honestly, that will be the best option for the Belgian in order to get first team opportunities.

Memphis Depay-

He was brought this season alongside Bastian Schweinsteiger and just like him, he failed to deliever what he was expected. His scintillating performance last season in the Dutch league caught the eyes of many European giants and Manchester United were the one who got the signature of the player.

Soon after his arrival, the 22-year-old Dutch star was given the first team experience, but inconsistency and poor performances drove him to the bench and eventually, the local boy Jesse Lingard became the first choice for the manager. A brilliant performance against Midtjylland in the Europa League suggested that he has got what it takes to wear the iconic number 7 shirt, but the player hardly appeared after that.

He hardly scores and hardly create the chances for the team. In his 28 appearances in the league this season, he has scored just 2 goals and have no assist to his name and that easily makes him the worst signing of the season.

Raheem Sterling-

With great power comes great responsibility, that phrase is well suited for the 21-year-old English International. During his tenure at Liverpool, the little Englishman was unstoppable. His flashy pace, his techniques on the ball and his playmaking abilities made him one of the best youth prospects of the world.

On July 12 2015, Manchester City claimed the services of Raheem and the transfer made him the seventh most expensive transfer of all time. He was supposed to continue his great form and take the team to different heights, but the youngster dropped his form while at the Etihad and enjoyed most of his time as an injured player.

His decline in form made him the second choice player for Pellegrini and Sterling eventually lost his position to the Spanish winger Jesus Navas who is also not giving his best. Sterling did score a hat trick against Bournemouth, but he never had that game changing impact on the biggest of stages.
