Tottenham fans were left fuming last season as their team’s winless run of four games at the end not only vanquished any title ambitions but also saw them finish below their North London rivals Arsenal. However we shouldn’t see this as a failure, in fact, it was by far the best season Tottenham have had since quite a few years. They were lethal going forward and solid while defending it. Players like Dele Alli and Harry Kane rose to the occasion and destroyed every opponent that came their way. If everything was so good, one should wonder then what went wrong. Well, Pochettino didn’t have quality players to cover for the players in the starting XI.
Whenever changes were made to the starting XI due to injury or suspension the team looked out of sorts. Pochettino has plugged at least two gaps by bringing in Victor Wanyama and striker Vincent Janssen. Pochettino will also look to utilize the youngsters coming out of the Tottenham academy. He is a manager who is keen to bring young blood into the team and even next season, it should continue on the same path. Carter-Vickers is touted to be the most promising centre-back to emerge from the Tottenham academy since the days of Ledley King. The 18-year-old has represented the USA in all age groups and has also made the Matchday squad under Pochettino this season. He has been in brilliant form this preseason and will be looking to break into the first team next season. He has tremendous potential and is being prepared to take over from Jan Vertonghen, whose injury led to the American international getting a place in the squad.
Edwards is undoubtedly the brightest young spark in the Tottenham academy right now. However, Pochettino is urging caution. He is still 17 years old, therefore has a lot of years ahead of him to achieve his targets. He scored in the recent friendly over Rotherham and was excellent in a 30-minute cameo against Italian Champions Juventus in their first match of the Australian Tour. He has the right flair and dribbling ability to make it very high in the game. Next season will be crucial in terms of his development.
An England under 20 international, Winks made a few appearance for the first team last season off the bench. He is a deep lying midfielder, who is excellent at setting the tone of the game. He might find it difficult to make it to the starting XI due to the presence of Dele Alli and Eric Dier, therefore his focus will be on making as many substitute performances as he can and covering well if the duo gets injured.
