Three Top Class Defensive Targets For Manchester City To Consider In January

Manchester City are undoubtedly having their best season. They are on course to reaching 100 points in the league and after a draw against Crystal Palace, they are looking at another run of victories. This side has forced open the record books time and again and have only looked upwards this season. The Cityzens’ transfers in summer including the ones they made last January have helped them perform at the highest level in all competitions so far.

Pep hasn’t been shy from spending big, something that has surely paid off. A very few would say Manchester City will not win the PL or the Carabao Cup. Their attack oozes quality, pace and creativity. Surely, one of the main areas which they need to improve is the central defence. Hence, to fill the smallest of voids in this near perfect squad and compete for the most prestigious Champions League, here are three realistic transfer targets that Manchester City can aim for.

Giorgio Chiellini

This is the latest of all speculations and rumours. Pep is reportedly planning a swoop for the Juventus protector. This is simply because they need an able, experienced centre-back who can guide the back line like Vincent Kompany. Certainly, he’d be a better option to have in the squad than someone like Mangala. Chiellini has won almost everything in Italy and is one of the best in business. The 33-year-old is in many analysts’ dream team and is a symbol of consistency and solidity at the back.

Chiellini is as good as the ex-Belgium captain in terms of aerial battles and physicality. However, he too has been suffering from injuries and is two years older than Kompany. So it would be a gamble, but a gamble that would pay off big time if it clicks.

Harry Maguire

Manchester City are reportedly lining up a stunning £50m for Leicester City centre-back, Harry Maguire. He joined the Foxes only this summer, after having been a silver lining for the relegated Hull City side last season. This term too, he has been tight and has managed five clean sheets.

Also to add, he is a real threat going forward for corners and other set-pieces. The 24-year-old is a fine tackler and is still young and practically, he could be a stellar signing for Guardiola and his team. He has 2 goals and 4 assists this season and is more than capable of finding a good range of passing that includes diagonal passing. This could be just fine for the centre-back as he is on top of his game, for both club and country.

Inigo Martinez

Real Sociedad have demanded Manchester City to pay the release clause of the formidable defender they possess. With Pep looking to strengthen his ranks, it will be no surprise if he turns to the wallet provided to him. This season, he has been one of the best defenders in the La Liga and has already caught the eyes of Barcelona. Martinez is very quick to challenge the forwards, reads the game well and barely allows anything to get past him. For £28.5m, the English giants can consider signing him.
