3 Things We Learned From Manchester United’s Scrappy Win Over Norwich

Share

Manchester United were looking to finish 2013 on a high, while Norwich were looking to distance themselves from the relegation zone.

1. Welbeck is a small game player

Danny Welbeck

He never sets the world alight and often looks incapable, incompetent and out of place in the games that matter, but Danny Welbeck looks like the type of player who can come up with the good against clubs much smaller than Manchester United. This may seem like David Moyes will have no use for the former Sunderland man, but quite the contrary, Welbeck may be the worst striker United have, and also may be the worst player amongst the top 7 clubs, but he can score against the weak teams, and that is a useful trait, no matter how little else he can do.

2. David Moyes must sign midfielders in January

Moyes

The Manchester United midfield is currently a wasteland home to players who never quite made it, overpaid for flops and young players that aren’t quite up to scratch. Anderson has his uses, and Marouane Fellaini has height and strength, but other than that, United’s midfield is more suited to a team like Sunderland. Even if the Scottish tactician fails to make any big name signings, at least something extra in midfield will help.

3. Norwich signed the wrong strikers

Norwich

At the start Ricky van Wolfswinkel looked like a good signing for a smart price, but I, among many football fans were sceptical of their purchase of Celtic’s Gary Hooper, a striker who had only impressed in the Scottish Premier League which is far below the standards of BPL. Leroy Fer has impressed when he could, and van Wolfswinkel has tussled with injury, though Norwich signed small game players to not only try and beat relegation, but also to push up the table. Needless to say, their plan has backfired. It will be hard for Norwich to sign any players of real stature when the January transfer window opens within a matter of days, and it also may be hard to justify the signings of more attacking players when that is their deepest department, but they must look into it, even if they have to sell their newest acquisitions.
