3 Things We Learned From Chelsea’s 3-3 Draw Against Everton: Where Was This Costa?

Share

Chelsea and Everton played out a thrilling 3-3 draw with all the goals coming in the second half at Stamford Bridge. Everton had earlier raced to a two goal lead, one goal coming from Kevin Mirallas while John Terry scored into his own net.

Chelsea then came back with a bang, first it was Diego Costa who was played in by Cesc Fabregas and then it was the Chelsea midfielder who levelled scores thanks to a deflected strike. Chelsea were then on a rampage to get a win at home, their first under Guus Hiddink but Everton struck in the 90th minute thanks to Funes Mori.

It seemed that Chelsea were heading for a 10th loss in the league but John Terry scored a clever flick on in the 97th minute though replays suggested he was a yard offside. Everton will feel hard done by the decision but they should have sealed the game when they were 2-0 ahead.

We look back at another incredible Premier League game and share the three things we learned from this game.

Nemanja Matic is going the Ivanovic way

First it was Branislav Ivanovic with his form going down the drain now it seems to have affected Nemanja Matic. The other Serbian in Chelsea was one of the worst performers against Everton and he was overrun by the Toffee’s midfield.

Matic continued his rather poor form and this will lead to many contemplating his future at the club. While most of the other players are playing better under Hiddink, Matic has not improved and if it continues in this manner for Matic, he could be off in this or the next transfer window.

Chelsea are in a dog fight at the moment

Chelsea were moments away from another defeat and even though John Terry scored a controversial goal things are not rosy for the Blues. Chelsea remain in the bottom half of the table and are not completely away from the relegation zone.

Guus Hiddink hasn’t been able to turn things around as much as he would have liked and that certainly would be a cause for concern at Chelsea. They could well be dragged into the relegation dog fight if they are not careful. They need to close out games and perform better and unless they can do that, games like this will become a norm for the Blues.

Where was this Diego Costa?

Costa got yet another goal under Hiddink, his fifth in the last six games and he looked every bit as the fighter that was causing defences all sorts of problems last season. This Costa was not the player putting on and going for Chelsea in the first half of the season but now seems to be back to his best.

He harried the Everton defence in the second half and linked brilliantly with Cesc Fabregas for the first two Chelsea goals. Chelsea fans will be happy with his performances now but they will also be thinking why wasn’t he playing this well earlier?
