Three reasons why Hummels is perfect for Arsenal

There have been rumours linking Borrusia Dortmund superstar Captain Mats Hummels to Arsenal. Arsenal are in dire need of a top central defender as they lack depth in defence. Mats Hummels is a proven world class player who’s currently playing in a struggling Dortmund side. Here are three reasons why Arsenal can really get the best out of their team if they sign Hummels.

Mats Hummels

1. He is a technical center back.

Hummels is good with the ball as he can pick out passes from defence and look to start attacks from the back. Arsenal want to play a positive brand of football and prefer technical players in their squad, and Hummels is a great example of a player who can bring back the quality of total football. This would enable Arsenal to use an out and out defensive midfielder, the types which are average technically as Hummels can offer a supply of offensive passes.

2. Hummels has tactical flair.

Arsene Wenger is more known for his philosophy than his tactics and a naturally tactical player would boost Arsenal’s tactical displays in the game.

As a player he is accustomed to both the deep block and the high pressing defensive lines unlike Per Mertesacker whose lack of pace troubles him when Arsenal press higher. As a top organiser in defence, Hummels can actually prove to be a great leader and drive the team mentality from the back. From the past years, we know Arsene Wenger as a manager, gives a lot of room for flair and would enjoy managing Hummels.

3. He is an all rounder.

With all his abilities as a tactician and a technical player, he is also a very strong and powerful defender. He does his basics correctly and knows his priorities. He has the ability to play as an out and out center back whenever needed and dominate strikers and play the Premier League way. Being well established as a strong aerial threat, interceptor and clinical tackler, Hummels will never be a liability like some of the attack minded defenders. When needed, he can pair with fellow German Per Mertesacker and that would also boost communication. Overall, an all-round package.
