Chelsea are headed into a summer of massive overhaul owing to reports of their manager and Eden Hazard leaving the team.
One of the moves they are considering to stem the flow is getting Anthony Martial. The £65,000-a-week Frenchman is unsettled under Mourinho and after failing to nail down a starting spot, he could be looking for another move.
However, a move for him isn’t prudent because Chelsea need to focus on other areas. Here are a few reasons why.
If Hazard doesn’t leave Chelsea in the summer, the club has enough players who can play in the wide position.
Pedro, Willian and Hazard all occupy the same position and they even have Victor Moses and Marcos Alonso if needed. Bringing in Martial will just add another player in a position they do not need strengthening in.
Martial plays better when deployed on the left-hand side and since Chelsea already have enough, he could just find himself warming the bench once again.
Martial has played centrally when given the chance at Old Trafford but he has not done enough to suggest that he deserves a starting place. Chelsea lack a central striker who can deliver regular goals and Martial isn’t the answer for the same.
They need to strengthen their midfield more after moves for Barkley and Drinkwater haven’t really resulted in them performing. Martial does not fit the bill here either and should leave for a club where he can get more game time.
Probably the biggest driving factor for Martial to not join Chelsea is their lack of Champions League football next season.
Even if he doesn’t get to start regularly for United, Martial will at least get to feature in the Champions League for the club next year. With next season being a make-or-break one for the Portuguese manager, Martial could motivate himself enough to give it a last shot at the club.
Chelsea have to focus elsewhere if they are to get top talent to join their squad following a disappointing end to their league season this year. There are other players who can make up the empty spots in their squad and with the right recruitment, they can find the ideal players. However, Martial isn’t the one.
