West Ham United have been toying with the idea of signing Robert Snodgrass from Hull City for quite some time now. The Hammers tested the Tigers earlier this month with a derisory £3 million bid for their top-scorer this term which was emphatically rejected. However, with Dimitri Payet refusing to take the field for the East London club, Slaven Bilic is chasing the Scotsman with much more resolve and intent and the Hammers are reportedly submitting a bid of £8 million for Snodgrass.
The 29-year old has been Hull City’s best player this term and recently signed a one-year extension with the club. And new manager Marco Silva issued a hands-off warning to the Hammers in one of his very first press conferences after taking over at the KCOM Arena. But with the threat of relegation looming large over Hull, a chance to move to a club competing for a place in the top-half of the table could prove to be appealing for Snodgrass.
Now the latest reports have suggested that the Clarets saw their offer of around £10m accepted on Wednesday and the Hammers responded by raising their own offer – a third – which was accepted by Hull later in the day.
Here we give you three reasons why Snodgrass could be the perfect addition for the Hammers and prove to be the right replacement for Payet:
Snodgrass has been the leading scorer for Hull City this season having netted 7 times in the Premier League along with two more strikes in the EFL League Cup.
Goals have been somewhat of a concern for West Ham this season with none of the strikers firing. Michail Antonio was the only source of goals for the Hammers and now a fully-fit Andy Carroll is firing them in on a constant basis. However, with Snodgrass on the field, goals will be a guarantee for Slaven Bilic and with his pinpoint crosses from the wide areas, Carroll will have a lot more opportunities to get himself on the scoresheet. This could provide a great push as they go about chasing for a place in the top-half of the table.
Snodgrass is an extremely versatile player and can play on either flank or through the middle and can also be utilized in a deeper midfield role too. At times, he has also played as an auxiliary forward this season for Hull and has been a threat from everywhere on the pitch.
His ability to go past his man with excellent close control and his confidence and the way he backs himself to hit the ball from range make him a potent option to have. And add to that his excellent set-piece abilities, Bilic and West Ham will not feel the absence of Dimitri Payet. Snodgrass has netted some breathtaking goals from free-kicks this term and with his accurate delivery, he can also bring in the likes of Carroll and Antonio into the game, posing more questions to the opposition defence in the box.
West Ham have been burned badly by their summer signings this season. Bilic opted to sign players with absolutely no experience of English football and all of the new arrivals struggled to make an impact.
Simone Zaza was abysmal, to say the least, Gokhan Tore and Sofiane Feghouli have struggled to adapt and Jonathan Calleri had to wait till the last weekend to score his first goal for the club. However, with Snodgrass, the Hammers will be buying a seasoned professional, who has played close to 9 years in England with Leeds United, Norwich City and now Hull City. Snodgrass’ know-how of the English game will be a huge benefit for West Ham and hence a move for him makes total sense.
