Mauricio Pochettino is fast growing into a smart manager at White Hart Lane as his Tottenham Hotspur side, one of the youngest in the Premier League are fighting for the title for the second year running. The manager will be relatively happy with his recent recruits but will be looking to offload a few players in the summer transfer window at the end of the season and one such player who could be on his way out of London is Algerian National Team star Nabil Bentaleb.
The 22-year old joined the Spurs back in 2012 as a youth player and just took a year to be promoted to the senior side. He made his debut in 2013 for the Spurs and has since made less than 50 appearances for the side. He is currently out on loan at Veltins-Arena in Germany until the end of the season where he has so far scored 4 goals in 2 games for Markus Weinzierl’s side this season. And reports now suggest that Bentaleb is close to signing a permanent deal with the Bundesliga outfit a for a fee of £16m in the summer. Here are three reasons why this sale is a must for the Spurs:
Though the market will be inflated in the summer, Bentaleb, signed a new contract that keeps him at the Lane till 2020 and this is sure to increase his value. But with just over 21 appearances for his national side, the 22-year old is far from a proven player and is not someone who is worth £16m already. He is a decent player who has loads of potential but Pochettino, who is looking to add few players to his squad in the summer, would not want to miss out on the millions, a fringe player in the squad can fetch him at the end of the season.
2. The Squad at the Lane:
The manager is desperate to improve the quality of the squad in the summer and at the moment, Bentaleb does not belong to the best 16 at the White Hart Lane. A central midfielder by trait, Bentaleb will have to fight for his place with the likes of Mousa Dembele and Victory Wanyama, who have been in great form this season. Youngster Harry Winks is also making great progress, which leaves the 22-year old Algerian with little chance of first team football. Surely, the £16m he will fetch is of more value to Spurs than what he can provide on the field.
3. The options:
With no disrespect to the midfielder, Mauricio Pochettino’s side can surely add a player of higher quality than Bentaleb in the summer. Having come close to the title last season, and also pushing for it this season, Spurs are right up there with the best teams in the League at the moment and they will need top quality stars in every position on the field and also on the bench. The manager will be looking to add a midfielder to the squad who can walk into the first team when needed and Bentaleb is far from a player who can do that. Tottenham would be better off selling Bentaleb and bringing in a player who fits the bill more than what the 22-year old offers for next season.
