3 Reasons Why Mauricio Pochettino Should Look To Offload This Struggling Goal Poacher

Share

Tottenham have been in supreme form in the holiday period and have established themselves as a firm contender in the title run in after having defeated Premier League table toppers Chelsea convincingly at the White Hart Lane last weekend.

Harry Kane has been in top form whereas Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen are also hitting their strides now, turning the Spurs attack into a formidable machine. However, one person who has struggled to get going for the Lilywhites is summer signing Vincent Janssen.

Having made the move from AZ Alkmaar in the summer for £18.5million, Janssen has found it hard to find his bearings in the Premier League and as a result has struggled to find the net on a regular basis. Here we look at three reasons, why Pochettino should look to replace the Dutchman in the winter transfer window:

Lack of Goals

Janssen joined Tottenham on the back of a stellar campaign with AZ in the Dutch Eredivisie where he had scored 27 goals in 34 appearances. However, it has not been the same story for the talented Dutchman in London.

Having featured in 23 games across all competitions for Tottenham this term, Janssen has scored only three goals. He was regularly involved in the playing XI earlier in the season, during Harry Kane’s enforced absence due to injury, but the 22-year old failed to make the most of the opportunities that he got and has had to play bit-part role ever since. What has been more disappointing is he has failed to score even once from open play for Spurs with all his goals coming from the penalty spot.

Adaptability Issues

The Dutch marksman has had a tough start to life at the Lane. He has struggled to get used to the pace at which the game is played in England and has had to face an uphill battle to cope with the physicality of the English top division, which has minimalized his threat in the final third.

He has also struggled to get used to the style of play that Pochettino and Tottenham employ which has been another cause for concern for the Lilywhites. While the goals haven’t come at all, he has also struggled to pose any sort of danger to opposition defences and has failed to create opportunities for his teammates. Janssen in his 15 league appearances, has created only 12 clear cut goal-scoring opportunities for his peers and has only a single assist against his name, which is some distance off from the rest of the Spurs attackers. Even Moussa Sissoko, who has featured less and has been under criticism for his displays, has created more chances, bringing into question Janssen’s suitability to the Spurs way.

Most Shots in the League without scoring

This stat comes as a bit of a shocker for Spurs fans, but Vincent Janssen has taken the most number of shots in the Premier League, by any forward player, without scoring a goal from open play. The former AZ Alkmaar man has attempted a league-high 33 shots at goal but all of his efforts have failed to find their way past the opposition goalkeeper. His only goal in the league came against Leicester City from the penalty spot way back in October.

Having forked out a large sum of money, better displays were expected from Janssen but given his disappointing campaign so far, Spurs would be better off bringing in a replacement at the earliest.
