Everton star Romelu Lukaku has suddenly become the most talked about star in the Premier League after he recently announced that he will leave Goodison Park at the end of the season. The Belgian international, who has 19 goals to his name this season, is currently the top goal scorer in the league and is one of the most exciting talents in England at the moment. However, he is ready to quit Everton in search of trophies and has already attracted interests from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United recently.
Both PL clubs are desperate for some attacking additions in the summer transfer window with neither of them having any financial restrictions. Lukaku will not come for cheap but both Chelsea and United would be prepared to break the bank to land him at the end of the season.
But where does Lukaku fit in better? Though it is not an easy question to answer, here are three reasons why Manchester United is a better destination for the Belgian this summer:
Winning trophies and earning higher wages is only a part of what Lukaku wants at his new home. He seems to want to play week in week out to improve as a player and Jose Mourinho can promise him the same next season. Though Zlatan Ibrahimovic is offered a contract extension at the club, it is hard to see him play two games a week next season and United need a first team star who can lead the attack of their side in the domestic league. Lukaku, with all his PL experience, is more than capable of leading the line for Manchester Untied and surely will get more game time than at his former club Chelsea.
Manchester United have some of the brightest youngsters in world football currently playing at the club. Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw, Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba are at the start of their careers and are sure to stay at the club for the long term. Lukaku, 23, will fit right into this system as he will play alongside Martial and Pogba, and would take no time to adjust to the challenges at the new club. Though playing alongside national team-mate Eden Hazard would be fruitful, Lukaku can assume a sterner role in front of goal for Manchester United making him an important player in the squad. Surely, the Old Trafford is a more attractive destination for Lukaku than Stamford Bridge at the moment.
Though Lukaku’s goal scoring abilities might tempt Conte to use him regularly, Chelsea have one of the best strikers in world football in Diego Costa in their ranks. At the moment, Costa is second to very few players in Europe and cannot be pushed out of the first team anytime soon. Lukaku is more than capable of pushing the Spaniard for his place in the first team but having two players of that calibre will only mean a waste of potential. Neither Lukaku nor Costa will be able to lead the line consistently and it will only make Lukaku’s second appearance at the Bridge all the worse. Surely, Lukaku will get to play more regularly at the Old Trafford.
