3 players Derby County can target in the January transfer window

Derby County have made a decent start to the new Championship season, winning four out of six games. Derby have also qualified for the third round of the Carabao Cup by thrashing Hull City 4-0.

The Rams have entered a new era after appointing Frank Lampard as manager and the former Chelsea midfielder has brought excitement to Pride Park with his high intensity and attacking style of football.

The Championship appears to be more competitive than ever, with relegated sides West Brom, Stoke City and Swansea City all expected to make the push for promotion. Lampard, who has done well in the first few games at the club, signed some really exciting players in the summer transfer window. But to claim a place in the playoffs, he will need a few more signings in January.

With that in mind, here are three players Derby should sign to help support their potential promotion push this season.

Dominic Solanke (Liverpool)

Derby County must make a loan move for Dominic Solanke, who is yet to establish himself at Anfield. Despite Derby being filled with attacking players, it is an area Lampard can still improve and Solanke is the perfect player to do that.

Dominic Solanke

Solanke has found opportunities limited and with the likes of Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino ahead him, it would be wise for the 20-year-old to drop down a division in January to continue his development.

The 20-year-old should be a looking at a club where he’s guaranteed regular game time and Derby could be a good place to spend the second half of the 2018/19 campaign.

Ryan Christie (Celtic)

While Ryan Christie has stayed put at Celtic despite being out of favour under Brendan Rodgers, he could be ready for a move in January. That could be the time for Derby to make a move for the talented Christie.

If Christie was to arrive from Celtic, he could offer creativity and incisiveness in attacking areas as Derby go all out for promotion. He can also operate as a winger, has the pace and experience to terrorise any team. He would be an excellent addition to the Rams in January.

Kieran Dowell (Everton)

Derby have a number of options in the middle of the park but they lack a real enforcer; somebody who can get the ball and keep the team ticking.

George Evans is injured and while Tom Huddlestone has just returned from injury, he has started ageing. It appears that the new signing needs to be the kind of player who knows how to control games.

That should possibly tempt the Rams to make a move for Everton youngster Kieran Dowell, who did well last season on loan at Nottingham Forest. The 20-year-old is a solid option should Lampard wish to boost Derby’s midfield in January.
