The season might be over for Chelsea in terms of winning the title, but this only sets the tone for next season as the club tries to defend the title and also target a few more trophies. Jose Mourinho has built a formidable side and has world class talent in almost all positions, sometimes two world class players are fighting it out for one position and that is how he keeps the hunger in the team. The transfer season would be yet another opportunity for the Special one to weave his magic as he has done in the past two summers, we look at 3 players who Chelsea could sign next season.
1. Rickie Lambert
A bit of a shock to be honest, Rickie Lambert hasn’t really done much since signing for his boyhood club Liverpool, but he has been in the news for a move away from Anfield this summer. The English striker could be on his way to Chelsea as they look for a replacement for Didier Drogba. Lambert would be a decent option to have come off the bench and Jose would actually use the lanky forward more than Brendan Rodgers does. Lambert still has a couple of good seasons under him and he could be willing to make a move for more game time.
2. Robert Green
QPR might have been relegated from the Premier League but Rob Green was one of the few players who gave it all for the club, had it not been for Green and his brilliant goalkeeping at times, QPR could have been relegated even sooner. He is now linked with Chelsea. The English goalkeeper would be a replacement for Petr Cech who could be leaving the club this summer for more regular football. Having Green as backup wouldn’t be the worst option and certainly he would not mind sitting on the Chelsea bench, plus Jose could use him during cup runs with all the experience Green has, he could also be a leader at the club.
3. Raphael Varane
Chelsea do need to have some options for their centre back pairing, especially with John Terry getting old (but staying one of the best defenders out there), their right back Ivanovic is also above 30 and it could be time to give a young gun some game time. Varane would not come for cheap from Real Madrid, but he has had experience of playing under Jose Mourinho when the Spaniard was there at the club and he wouldn’t mind moving back with the Portuguese. Varane is a talented defender who would be brilliant for any club and Chelsea would do well to be able to attract the defender for the now and the future.
