3 Plan B’s For Arsenal To Counter The Defensive Minded Teams

Share

Arsene Wenger’s London outfit will walk into the international break with smiles on their faces after their last minute victory over Burnley at the Turf Moor this weekend. Laurent Koscielny scored a lucky goal in stoppage time as the Gunners managed to take all three points from the game, posting their 5th consecutive victory early this season. However, the lack of quality in attack almost cost them a couple of points against Sean Dyche’s side, who were left red-faced by the visitors on the night. It was one of the very few weaknesses that the Gunners have shown this season and with clubs from the bottom of the points table ready to use similar tactics, it will be important for Wenger to have a plan-B that was evidently absent against Burnley. Here are 3 things that the manager can do to overcome teams that sit deep and allow no space and time for the attackers:

Strength and ability of Giroud:

Arsene Wenger has not used the Frenchman to lead his side’s attack this season and though it is presumed that Giroud is not match fit yet, the performances from Alexis Sanchez as a number 9 will give Giroud no chance of a comeback. However, against teams like Burnley that thrive on closing gaps between play, Giroud will be a lethal weapon. His strength in the air will help the side have an another dimension in attack while his slick passing moves will create space for his teammates even in crunch situations. Giroud’s addition to the team give Arsenal another threat in the attack and if given the full 90 minutes, the French international will surely help his side in breaking defenses in the Premier League this season.

Walcott and Chamberlain on either wings:

One of the easiest ways to break open a compact defense is to stretch it to the point that it self-destructs. This needs pace on the wings and the players willing to take on their opponents and create chances. This is where Wenger can opt for blistering pace on either flank. Chamberlain on the left and Walcott on the right gives Arsenal great width in attack and will allow them to create space for the likes of Sanchez and Ozil through the middle. Both players are comfortable taking on the defenders and will surely give Arsenal a better chance of finding their way to the goal against teams that like to sit back and defend.

Ozil in a deeper role:

Not an option that will amuse the German but it can easily turn out to be an effective one. In games like these, Ozil’s effect on the game is its lowest. He needs time and space on the ball to weave his magic and it might be time for him to take on a slightly deeper role to command the midfield and create chances from there. He is more than capable of playing that role and with the attacking threat of the opponents at a bare minimum, he will still be an effective option in attack. Taking up the space in front Granit Xhaka, the German international can dictate the play, and tire the opponents down before finding the defense breaking passes that he is accustomed to. He will find more space and time on the ball and will surely improve the attacking threats of his side.
