3 Key Things We Learned From Chelsea’s Comeback Win vs Southampton

Share

Chelsea came from behind to defeat Southampton in a pulsating game at St. Marys. It was Southampton who took the lead thanks to Shane Long before the break but Cesc Fabregas equalised, controversially for Chelsea before Branislav Ivanovic got the winner for the Blues.

Chelsea moved up to 11th in the league table while Southampton remain in seventh place, the win will obviously give Chelsea the lift they need as they hunt for European football through the league positions next season and also for the tie against PSG in a few weeks’ times.

We look back at the game and list out the three things we learned from the game.

  1. Hiddink Still Got It
guus hiddink

Guus Hiddink has not face defeat in the Premier League this season for Chelsea. The former Netherlands manager certainly has turned things around for the side from London and now are unbeaten in their last 11 league games.

Chelsea might not have started the best against Southampton and were a bit fortunate to get the goal but they did do well in the game and keep marching on. This side looks nothing like the side that was struggling under Jose Mourinho and who knows where they could have ended the season had they played in this manner from the start of the campaign.

2. Fabregas on form

Cesc Fabregas

Cesc Fabregas has been one of the players who has been singled out for his poor form this season for the Blues. Chelsea though saw the best of him in the game against Southampton as he not only got the first goal for Chelsea but also was great in midfield.

His movement and passing was spot on for the Blues as they looked for a way to get back into the game. The win might have been important for Chelsea but even more importantly for the Blues was the fact that Fabregas might be finding his range and that can only mean good news come the end of the season.

3. Silverware for Chelsea?

Chelsea’s best chance of any glory this season could be in the FA Cup. They dispatched Manchester City rather easily and could well end the reign of Arsenal come May, Chelsea know that they have to either win the Champions League or come in the top six for a spot in Europe.

What could be an easier route to some sort of European football could be playing well in the FA Cup and winning it. Chelsea have been great under Hiddink and with the likes of Diego Costa, Cesc Fabregas and even Branislav Ivanovic playing well, the Blues could well celebrate a trophy at the end of the season.
