Everton vs Arsenal: 3 Key Talking Points

The inconsistency of both teams playing at Goodison was for all to see as Everton were comfortably beaten by Arsenal. The Gunners had lost their last two games and were knocked out from two cup competitions before coming to Merseyside while Everton had defeated Chelsea in the FA Cup to keep their hopes of silverware alive.

If anyone expected Everton to do all the running, that was not to be as Arsenal were bright in attack and goals from Danny Welbeck and Alex Iwobi easily took care of any hopes that might have plagued Arsene Wenger about his side’s ability to get results in tough places.

Everton were extremely poor and questions will be asked about their home form under Roberto Martinez. We look back at the game and highlight the three things that stood out the most from the clash.

1. Iwobi has a bright future

It might have been a surprise seeing the name of the 19-year-old in the game against Barcelona in midweek but that tie was more or less done and dusted, what was more surprising was seeing his name against Everton as well.

Iwobi though showed that he is the real deal and sealed a great display with a goal on his Premier League debut. The youngster has shown that he can play in the first team and hopefully Arsene will give him a few more chances to become a regular in the starting XI. Arsenal might have unearthed a new star.

. Roberto Martinez is under extreme pressure

Roberto Martinez took over Everton and led them to fifth place in their first season but that is all that they have been able to do under the Spaniard. Last season they didn’t finish in the top eight and for all certainty they won’t be able to do anything this season as well.

Everton are great in attack but extremely poor in defence and that is something that Martinez has not been able to solve ever since he took over the team. Everton are under new owners and that could mean a change in managers unless Martinez makes them better, another poor home performance and three points dropped, certainly does not bode well for the former Wigan manager.

3. Welbeck preferred over Giroud?

Everyone wondered what Arsene Wenger was thinking when he bought Danny Welbeck but the Englishman did not have time to prove his ability being injured for a good chunk of the season so far. Now that he has regained his fitness, the former Manchester United man have found the back of the net four times in nine games.

Olivier Giroud was also rested against Barcelona but was dropped to the bench for this game also and that is not a good sign for the French striker.
