Why Leeds United should sign Lewis Macleod from Brentford

According to a report in Scottish Sun, Championship giants Leeds United are poised to step up their interest to sign Lewis Macleod. The Brentford midfielder is out of contract in the summer and the Whites are monitoring his situation. Scottish side Rangers are also keeping close tabs.

With Samuel Saiz leaving the club for Getafe in January, Marcelo Bielsa is keen to add a replacement sooner than later. Macleod has played quite a few times for Rangers before joining Brentford. (Scottish Sun)

As per the report, he has rejected an offer for a new contract from the Bees, confirming his commitment to leave Griffin Park in the summer or in January. Here’s why Leeds United should sign Macleod next month in a cut-price deal:

Lewis Macleod

Lewis Macleod’s quality will be helpful to the Peacocks

After the departure of the Spaniard, it is pretty clear that Leeds would be slightly short on options in the creative midfield department. They have Adam Forshaw, Mateusz Klich as the only viable options for that number eight position, with Lewis Baker as a backup and Izzy Brown still not 100% fit.

Hence, if the Whites are to keep their place at the top of the table, they would need more strength in this department. Lewis Macleod could just be an ideal signing for them given that the Scot has been in great form this season.

The 24-year-old is predominantly a central midfielder but he is capable of operating as an attacking midfielder or as a wide midfielder. He possesses an excellent work rate for a midfield player.

Macleod has scored three goals and supplied one assist in 16 appearances in the league (four appearances from the bench). He has an eye for a good cross and through balls from the midfield. The key pass rate of 1.5 epitomises the aforementioned fact.

For a central midfielder, the ability to see what’s going on behind the shoulder is vital. The Scot is a fantastic tackler to break up the opposition attacks and cover the right spaces without the ball. He has a tackle rate of 1.9, which is impressive, to say the least.

Therefore, it is evidently clear that the 24-year-old could be an ideal fit for Marcelo Bielsa’s 4-1-4-1 system as one of the attacking central midfielders. He would be a perfect foil for Klich in the pockets of spaces. A must sign for Leeds!
