3 Diego Godin Alternatives Manchester United Should Look To Buy In January

Share

Manchester United seem set to continue their splurging for players, news has come in that United will be willing to spend up to £150 million in the June transfer window, the Manchester club are looking to sign Arjen Robben, Diego Godin, Mats Hummels and Kevin Strootman to build a championship winning squad.

Godin has been one of Atletico Madrid’s best players for the past 3-4 seasons and was heavily linked with a move away from the club but stayed at the club, Godin has been touted to be in the range of £20 million+ and United look set to sign the Uruguayan defender in June.

While getting the 28 year old might make sense given his rock solid performances for club and country, there are better options which United should aim and here are 3 centre backs which would fit United better than Godin.

Nevan Subotic

A similar price range to Godin but 3 years younger, the Serbian has been one of the best centre backs in the Bundesliga but is often overshadowed by his partner in defence Mats Hummels. Hummels might be a player who might be a little out of reach for United but getting the 25 year old Subotic would be a smart piece of business.

Subotic would bring some much needed steel into the Manchester defence and is known to be a great tactical defender. He is also great in the air and can pass and move the ball around well when in possession; he would certainly be an upgrade on the current United defenders.

Giorgio Chiellini

The 30 year old Italy and Juventus defender will be out of contract in the summer of 2015 and he can sign a pre contract with a non-Italian club in January, United and a whole host of other clubs are looking and monitoring the situation. Chiellini would be a much cheaper addition to the United squad and would provide Manchester United a lot of experience in the centre of defence.

Not only would Chiellini be an amazing seasoned professional playing for Manchester United, he is primed and known for his tackling and marking, something that most Italian defenders are extremely good at. The only problem with this deal could be his willingness to not move away from Italy but if Juve dilly dallies on his contract, United could be in the mood to swoop him up.

Ryan Shawcross

Ryan Shawcross – Stoke City

There will be a lot of eyebrow raising with this name being suggested but Ryan Shawcross has been one of the most consistent defenders in the Premier League since he signed for Stoke City. He is known for his tough tackling and no nonsense attitude though he is susceptible to the odd mistake here and there.

The 27 year old Englishman would be an ideal player for Manchester United since he knows the league extremely well and plays for one of the toughest teams in the league. Shawcross started his career at Manchester United, he represented the U17 and U18 teams and this would be a fitting return for the Englishman, back home.
