3 Defensive Midfield Enforcers Who Arsenal Should Target This Summer

Arsenal have a couple of spots to fix regarding the strength of the squad, while everyone has talked about the need for better central defenders, there is no doubt that Arsenal need a defensive midfielder for next season. They already were shorthanded this season, but the rise of Francis Coquelin has somewhat dispelled their issues with the position. Coquelin is still young and relying on him for every game next season might be a hurdle too far to cross.

Arsenal have been known to invest big on players, the likes of Sanchez and Ozil bears testament to that and with another transfer window coming up before the start of next season, we can be sure that Arsene Wenger will be checking out some of the best defensive midfielders out there. We list down three defensive midfielders who could be available for Arsenal and could make a huge difference to the Gunners as well.

1. Sami Khedira

The biggest, well one of the biggest free agents available at the end of this season. Sami Khedira has been linked with a move away from Real Madrid since last season, but he had not been able to muster a move away from the Spanish capital. Now it is almost a certainty that Sami will be leaving the Champions League winners, he would be the ideal signing for Arsenal as he not only is a great defensive midfielder but he has a great engine and can join the attack quickly. Khedira might be 28, but he still has a couple of seasons left in him and with Arsenal in deep need of a world class defensive midfielder, who could be better than Khedira?

2. Morgan Schneiderlin

Arsene might be tempted to stay within the confines of the Premier League, the old talk about having a tried and tested player could make the case for Morgan Schneiderlin. The Southampton defensive midfielder was expected to join the exodus of talent that took place last summer when Lallana, Lovren, Lambert and Shaw left the club, but he was not allowed to. Morgan is 25-years-old and has been one of the best players for the Saints this season under Ronal Koeman. Arsenal have been linked with him in the last few transfer windows, but they could make the final push to secure his signature. He could cost around £20 million upwards, would he be worth that gamble? That is the question Wenger would be asking himself.

3. Sven Bender

Another player who has been linked with a move to Arsenal for the last 3 years or so, Sven Bender could be the answer to Arsenal’s defensive midfielder issues. Him leaving Borussia Dortmund can actually take place since Jurgen Klopp is set to leave the club and as soon as a manager of Klopp’s influence exits a club, there will be some casualties. Bender might be a little injury prone and bit on the slower side, but he does have the steel and grit to be one of the best players in the world. He could provide the steel that Arsenal need so much; the price point could be a stumbling block for the Gunners if they are to sign the German international.
