Tottenham Hotspur have been one of the most meaner teams defensively in the Premier League as they stand in the 3rd place in the points table, 9 points off Chelsea at the top of the table. The likes of Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier have played at the center back position to great effect this season while the manager also has a few backups in the squad for contingencies. But one player who has left the squad is Federico Fazio. The 29-year old joined Italian outfit AS Roma at the start of the season and has cemented a place in the side in Rome and the Roma are now poised to sign him on a permanent basis leaving Tottenham in search of another defensive addition.
Here are 3 such player who can replace Fazio at the Lane this summer:
A star player a couple of seasons ago, Ranocchia is no longer in the plans of the manager at the San Siro and he has been linked with an exit for a while now. West Ham United, Swansea and Hull are all interested in the signature of the £5m rated star who is more than happy to join the Spurs side this month. At 28, Ranocchia will be a like to like replacement for Fazio who was far from being the first choice at the club. The Italian is still in his prime and will surely fight for his place in England, which might improve the whole squad in the capital city.
Though not a player yet linked with Tottenham Hotspur, the Liverpool boy is a decent option for the Spurs in the future. The French defender has been out of favour at Anfield for a while now after Jurgen Klopp decided to freeze him out of the first team for his antics on the pre-season tour to the US.
He is yet to play a game for the side this season but has been busy with the U23. He is still up for sale with Liverpool demanding around £20m for him and if Spurs can get the player to agree for a move, they might even be able to snap him up for less. At just 26, Sakho’s age, and his experience in the Premier League will be more than welcome at the White Hart Lane.
A tremendous improvement on Fazio, Van Dijk is the best option for Spurs in this list. However, it will be interesting to see if the Dutch international is prepared to play as a second fiddle at the club next season. Van Dijk, is easily one of the best defenders in the Premier League at the moment and though he signed a new contract at the start of the season, he is still wanted by a host of Premier League clubs and there is no reason why Spurs should look away. He may be available at a high price but he is a high-quality defender and is sure to improve the squad.
