With Ashley Cole leaving Chelsea this season only and Cesar Azpilicueta only a converted left back by Jose Mourinho the need for a left back at Chelsea is there for everybody to see. With the rigours of a full season ahead Jose Mourinho is smart enough to realize that he needs another left back to cope up with pressure. While it would not be easy to convince a really good left back to come to Chelsea to essentially play back up to Cesar Azpilicueta, which is exactly what Jose Mourinho will have to do. We here at Soccersouls take a look as to the three left backs Chelsea should target to play for them next season.
1. Filipe Luis: The Atletico Madrid left back is one player Jose Mourinho would love to bring at Stamford Bridge. At 28 he is at the prime of his career and is definitely one of the best left backs in the La Liga. Most essentially for Chelsea he is very solid both defensively and going forward. He was a part of the Atletico Madrid defense which was comfortable holding on to 1-0 leads all the time. Also he is a very good crosser of the ball which will make Chelsea want him more. However one potentially stumbling back is the amount of transfer fee Atletico Madrid will charge for this left back in his prime and whether Chelsea who are trying to comply with FFP rules will shell out the money for him.
2. Nacho Monreal (Temporary/Backup ): A left back for Arsenal who is actually the most perfect for Chelsea in reality. At 28 he is more than decent and although second choice at Arsenal, he is still part of the Spanish World Cup squad this year. Before completing the transfer to Arsenal, he was probably the best left back in the La Liga after Jordi Alba for his stellar performances at Malaga. At Arsenal despite falling behind Gibbs in the pecking order, Nacho Monreal has been nothing short of exemplary in his dealing of the matter. Jose Mourinho should definitely target this Spaniard given how talented he is and more importantly that he will be a team player even if Cesar Azpilicueta gets the nod ahead of him.
Luke Shaw: The teenage left back is highly in demand by almost all top clubs but it would be such a big coup for Chelsea if the London club is able to pursue Luke Shaw to join them. At 18, Luke Shaw will probably not mind too much being down in the pecking order and playing second fiddle to Cesar Azpilicueta at the moment. However the talent that he is, Luke Shaw will definitely turn into a world class player sooner rather than later and in the meantime he can be a very important player for the blues. Perhaps this teenaged player will be the best long term solution for Chelsea and Jose Mourinho.
