2 goals, 11 assists – Leeds reviving their interest in this classy playmaker would solve a key issue for Bielsa

Why Leeds United should revisit their interest in Marcus Maddison

After the expected departure of Samuel Saiz, Leeds United should be in the January market in search of a playmaker. With an injury to Izzy Brown and the shortage of centre-backs and defensive midfielders, the Peacocks are down to one attacking midfielder in their squad who can start every game for them – Mateusz Klich.

Furthermore, given the 4-1-4-1 system Marcelo Bielsa likes to play, there is a need for two attack-minded midfielders on the pitch. Hence, it is clear that the Argentine has to dip into the market and sign two players of similar type.

As per a report in the Peterborough Telegraph, Leeds were interested in signing Peterborough United’s Marcus Maddison but pulled out of the deal. Here’s why they should revisit that interest and sign the attacking midfielder next month:

Marcus Maddison

Marcus Maddison’s versatility could be key

Predominantly a number 10 who can also play the attacking number eight role, Marcus Maddison is adept at operating on either wing if required. He has been in great form this season for Peterborough, scoring two goals and supplying 11 assists in 22 appearances in all competitions.

In terms of the attributes, the 25-year-old possesses a surprising turn of pace on the ball and can make late runs into the box to get at the end of the crosses. He can shoot from distance or from the edge of the box if time and space are offered in gift.

The passing range is the one where Maddison catches the eye. Having already supplied 11 assists this season, the playmaker is best suited to creating chances for the attackers.

The Peterborough man is still learning the art of being involved in the game even without possession. For him to completely master that, the best place would be with Marcelo Bielsa’s training ground.

Marcus-Maddison

As mentioned above, Leeds United need a playmaker or two in their squad for the second half of this season. Maddison could be their man going forward. He can also play on the left wing, so Ezgjan Alioski will have to raise his game up or risk losing his place in the team.

From the player’s point of view, working under a legendary manager like Bielsa would be an attractive package. If the Peacocks do make a move, the 25-year-old shouldn’t think about the next step. All in all, it would be a worthy deal for both parties.
