Why Everton must offload flop signing Michael Keane over the summer

Michael Keane was regarded as quite a talent at Burnley and was earmarked for a bright future as well. When he joined Everton last summer for £30m, there was a lot of excitement among the fans since he was seen as the ultimate option to act as a long-term option for the club in that area.

However, his performances have been quite underwhelming since then and his lackadaisical displays have earned the ire of a lot of their fans, leading to speculation that the Toffees might look to let him leave once the summer transfer window rolls about.

Given the age of both Ashley Williams and Phil Jagielka, it was important for Keane to step up and establish himself as a responsible option. Unfortunately for the club, his power fizzled out after a couple of promising displays and considering how dire the situation is, it might be best for the club to free up the wage bill and allow Keane to exit the club.

It might seem a bit hasty to let him leave so soon but the Toffees need somebody they can count on and Keane has not been reliable enough.

Everton went through quite a rough phase when the season began and they were teetering dangerously on the brink of the drop zone. That eventually led to Ronald Koeman’s sacking and after a brief stint by caretaker manager David Unsworth, the club decided to appoint Sam Allardyce in charge, who has managed to bring them out of the slump.

However, the defence continues to be an issue even though they seem to have climbed up to 9th spot. One look at their defensive record so far is enough to ascertain that they have quite a problem at hand.

To put things into perspective, Everton have shipped in 14 goals in their last 6 games and that is not a good number for a team that is trying hard to break into the top half of the table. Unless they sort out their defensive troubles, they cannot progress further. From what we have seen from Keane so far, he is not the knight in shining armour that they are so desperately in need of.

Hence, it might not be a bad idea for the club to cash in on him in the summer. The extra funds could help them land a more stable centre-back and that is certainly the need of the hour for Everton. As far as Keane is concerned, he still has a long way ahead of him and perhaps a change in environment will prove to be the best tool to get him back on track.
