Newcastle United Should Splash €20m On This Süper Lig Attacker In January And Here’s Why

Newcastle United have been interested in Besiktas’ Turkish striker Cenk Tosun for some time now and are looking to make a €20million bid for him in the January transfer window, though they may need to up that figure to land the hitman.

Besiktas president Fikret Orman has stated that their valuation is more than €20million for the main man who scored an important goal in the club’s impressive 1-1 draw with Monaco in the Champions League and has generally put in some excellent performances this term.

Tosun has 5 goals and an assist in the Turkish Super Lig but more impressively, 4 goals and 2 assists in 5 Champions League games and really does look like a proper striker. His figures of 10 goals and 3 assists in 18 appearances across all competitions mark him out as one of Europe’s hottest properties right now and a move to England seems like a natural step for him, possibly as early as January.

A lot depends on who is signing the cheques at St James’ Park when January rolls around, though based purely on performance and potential, I’d say there is no doubt whatsoever that a bid of more than €20million should not prohibit Newcastle from attempting to land the striker.

Rafa Benitez has stated publicly in the last few days that, in his words, top strikers cost £15m-£20m and the club simply didn’t pay that money in the summer which is why they are where they are. To be fair, he’s right, and those words may put enough pressure on even the current board to shell out some money for a proper goal scorer this winter.

We keep hearing how the club cannot or will not spend money and certainly their transfer dealings have been dwarfed by those of other Premier League clubs in recent seasons, even by the likes of Huddersfield Town for example.

However, when you consider that £13million was spent on Aleksandar Mitrovic two years ago and £10million on Dwight Gayle for a Championship season for this position a fee of £20m+ does not look at all out of place.

There is the potential for Tosun to come to England and hit 20+ goals and if he does that, he would immediately fall into the £50million+ category in today’s market. So if anything, the fee could simply be an investment. The bottom line though is; Newcastle need him.
