Wolves signing their £700,000 January target would be nothing but daylight robbery by Nuno Santo

Wolves opinion: Edwin Gyasi might prove to be a useful squad player at Molineux

According to claims from Ghanaian source SportsWorldGhana, Wolves have reignited their interest in CSKA Sofia’s Ghanaian international winger Edwin Gyasi, with a view to a potential deal in the summer.

The same report claims that both Wolves and Brighton were interested in signing the 27-year-old back in the January transfer window and Nuno Santo’s side had even tabled a bid of £700,000in order to bring the Ghanaian to Molineux, only for CSKA Sofia to turn down the offer.

This is not the first time though, that Gyasi has attracted interest from English clubs, with the Daily Mirrorreporting in December 2017 that Stoke City, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland were eyeing up a move for the player, who was then playing at Aalesunds FK in Norway.

SportsWorldGhana also adds that Gyasi has been scouted regularly by German clubs Stuttgart and Hannover this season.

The Dutch-born Ghanaian winger has caught the eye with a number of scintillating displays in the Bulgarian top-flight, registering a total of 4 goals and 8 assists from 33 appearances in all competitions.

The 27-year-old had a nomadic playing career in Holland, featuring for the likes of Roda JC, Heracles Almelo, FC Twente, and De Graafschap before moving on to represent Norwegian club Aalesunds and his current club CSKA Sofia.

To put things into perspective, the news of the club’s links with Edwin Gyasi is not expected to create too much noise amongst the fans at Molineux.

The 5-cap Ghanaian international is still a relatively unknown entity in European football and the fans have every reason to question the suitability of such as signing in the summer, particularly after the club’s fairy-tale run, following a return to the Premier League last summer.

While Gyasi lacks the profile to bear the tag of a marquee signing, the 27-year-old might prove to be a useful squad player for the Midland giants next season.

Having beaten Arsenal and Watford in successive games in the Premier League, Wolves have managed to establish their stranglehold on the Europa League qualification spot and there is every chance that the club might make a return to the European front after a long absence.

Wolves should take a lesson from Burnley’s troubles early in the season, when the Clarets found it difficult to rotate their players in the Premier League and Europa League, leading to a disastrous start to the campaign.

And Nuno Santo should sign a few more squad players to ensure that the club has the resources to deal with the pressure of playing in Europe next season.

While Wolves have already bagged a massive coup by signing Raul Jimenez permanently, the manager should look to bolster his ranks even further and he can certainly do with a bit more investment in his wide options.

The likes of Helder Costa, Ivan Cavaleiro have shown glimpses of their abilities but neither of them has been able to nail down a regular starting role, while Adama Traore’s decision-making in the final third leaving a lot to be desired.

A pacy and skillful attacker like Gyasi, who is capable of playing out wide on either flank and also through the centre as a supporting striker, would add much-needed depth to the squad, while also increasing competition for places.

Signing a player from the Bulgarian top-flight would be a bit of a gamble but Wolves should go ahead with this one, given that Gyasi is not likely to command a huge fee.
