Wolves opinion: Walter Kannemann would be a good fit at Molineux

According to a report from the Daily Mail, Wolves are interested in signing Gremio defender Walter Kannemann this summer, with the Brazilian club willing to sell the centre-back for £10.2million.

Kannemann, 28, has been a standout performer for Gremio this past season and made his senior debut for Argentina in September. Nicknamed ‘The Viking’, he has been the subject of enquiries from Arsenal and Atletico Madrid earlier this year.

But Wolves are now in the running for the Argentinean centre-back and must meet Gremio’s valuation to land the player this summer. The Wanderers are preparing for their second campaign in the Premier League, following their promotion last year.

Their first season was a roaring success, and they now have Europa League football to look forward to during the coming year. Nuno Espirito Santo is yet to sign a player so far but he’ll be keen to strengthen his squad in a bid to break into the top-six in 2019/20.

The Midlands outfit need strength in depth as far as the defensive options are concerned ahead of next season, as Nuno has worked with a thin squad during his time at Molineux so far.

The Portuguese tactician has the likes of Conor Coady, Willy Boly and Ryan Bennett as his main centre-backs, and while the likes of Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker can fill in when required, the necessity of another body in central defence cannot be emphasised further.

And that is why the signing of Walter Kannemann would make a lot of sense for Wolves. The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the best defenders in South America in recent years, and has made five appearances for his country, Argentina.

Standing at 6ft tall, Kannemann isn’t the tallest of defenders but he is more than capable of outmuscling the opposition with his strength, physicality and power.

While the Argentinean international is adept at imposing his authority inside the box with his physicality and aerial prowess, he is quick through the ground and agile for a defender, which allows him to deal effectively with a wide range of attackers.

Noted for his tough-tackling, energy and game-reading ability, the 28-year-old likes to keep things very tight at the back. To add to his tenacity and aggressive nature, he is very calm and composed with the ball at his feet which helps him in initiating attacks from the back.

Verdict

At 28, Kannemann should be entering the peak years of his career. The 28-year-old has enough experience in his locker to replicate his form in English football and at £10.2 million, he would represent a massive bargain for Wolves.
