Wolves Opinion: Why Nuno should make a move for Jean-Kevin Augustin?

Back in January, the Sun claimed Wolves were one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing RB Leipzig ace, Jean-Kevin Augustin.

A product of the Paris Saint-Germain academy, Augustin moved to RB Leipzig in 2017 and enjoyed a successful debut season in the Bundesliga, hitting 12 goals for the German outfit as he formed a deadly partnership with star striker Timo Werner.

However, he struggled with regular game time this past season under manager Ralf Rangnick, managing only three goals in 17 Bundesliga appearances.

With Julian Nagelsmann replacing Rangnick at the helm of Leipzig, the French striker could be given opportunities to reignite his career at the Red Bull Arena. Yet, Wolves must rekindle their interest in Augustin and attempt to sign him this summer in a bid to bolster their forward department.

Wolves made the loan signing of Raul Jimenez permanent from Benfica in the midst of the last campaign. Jimenez was a revelation in his debut Premier League season as he formed an unbelievable partnership with Diogo Jota up front and ripped apart teams.

Their understanding and movement supplemented with by Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho made the Wanderers such an exciting team to watch.

Nuno Espirito Santo couldn’t have asked for a better season in the Premier League, with Wolves exceeding expectations to finish seventh in the table as well as bagging a place in the Europa League qualifiers. In order to compete on all the fronts, Nuno must have a bigger squad than last season and that means reinforcing every single area of his team.

Adding a striker to compete and cover the likes of Jimenez and Jota is crucial ahead of the 2019/20 season and Nuno could do a fantastic job by landing Jean-Kevin Augustin.

Augustin is a rapid centre-forward, who is versatile enough of playing anywhere across the front-line.

The Paris-born star has searing pace and power as well as movement to hurt defenders and he’s also proven himself to be decent in the Bundesliga. But what makes the France Under-21 international lethal is his directness and ability to score goals from anywhere.

He is only 22 and will improve with time and maturity. Augustin wasn’t a permanent fixture in Leipzig’s starting XI last season and while there has been a change in the management at the Red Bull Arena, the forward could jump at the chance to work with Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo.

Verdict

Nuno’s style of play won plaudits last season with Wolves playing some free-flowing, devastating counter-attacking football. It is the style of play Augustin would thrive in and take the Molineux-based outfit to different level next term.
