Back in 2016, Colombian striker Carlos Bacca had revealed he had rejected a move to West Ham in order to stay with AC Milan. The Hammers had agreed on a £25million fee for the Carlos Bacca but he opted to remain in Milan due to family reasons.
After three years at Milan, Bacca, 33, joined Villarreal initially on loan in the summer of 2017. At the end of the season, he was sold to Villarreal as part of a transaction for Samu Castillejo.
The stocky Colombian has managed just 21 goals in 74 league games for the Yellow Submarine and while he turned 33 earlier this month, he still has a lot to offer at the highest level.
With that in mind, West Ham should reignite their interest in Bacca when the transfer window reopens in January.
West Ham spent big bucks on Sebastien Haller and Pablo Fornals in the summer transfer window to boost their forward options after allowing the likes of Andy Carroll, Marko Arnautovic and Lucas Perez to leave. They also signed young Albian Ajeti from FC Basel but allowed Javier Hernandez to leave for Sevilla.
Hernandez is a Premier League proven material and selling him without bringing in his replacement was something of a head-scratcher.
Haller may have quickly become a fan favourite at the London Stadium, but the Hammers are just an injury away that’ll leave them light up top. That’s when the signing of Bacca would make sense for the east Londoners.
Even though he has lost a yard of pace or two, Bacca is a proven goalscorer at the top of the European game. He is the finished article, having entered the advancing years of his career.
A clinical finisher who has a wealth of experience in playing at the highest level, for a sustained period of time, the Colombian international would be a top signing for West Ham as Haller’s back-up.
Bacca could be the perfect partner for Haller, should Manuel Pellegrini wish to play with two strikers up top. He would equally provide fantastic competition for the Frenchman if the West Ham chief opts for a lone front-man up top.
The ex-Sevilla and AC Milan striker won’t be a long-term investment for West Ham and on a knockdown price, he would be worth the penny. Hence, the Hammers must plot a January swoop for Bacca.
