Back in January 2017, the Daily Mail had claimed that West Ham were one of the Premier League clubs interested in signing Davie Selke, who was then playing for RB Leipzig.
Davie Selke, 24, joined RB Leipzig from Werder Bremen in 2015 and went onto play a key role for Leipzig, scoring 10 goals to fire the club to Bundesliga promotion. After spending two years with RB Leipzig, he joined Hertha Berlin in the summer of 2017 and has since done well at the club.
Although the former Germany Under-21 international is yet to open his account for Hertha Berlin this season, West Ham should reignite their interest in the striker in January.
West Ham boss Manuel Pellegrini knew he lacked depth in the striking options, and while he did bring in the likes of Sebastien Haller and Albian Ajeti over the summer, they aren’t enough to help the club achieve their ambitions this season.
The east London side are interested in bagging a spot in Europe this time around. They do have Sebastie Haller, Felipe Anderson, Declan Rice, Pablo Fornals, Issa Diop and a few others, they’re ambitious players. Both the club and the fans know that they need reinforcements, especially in central midfield and strike department.
Davie Selke would be a good option for the Hammers, as he has all the potential and the raw talent to be a future Germany number nine. He has suffered his fair share of injury issues over the last couple of years but is now fully fit and performing well at Hertha.
Powerful, quick and blessed with a 6ft 3ins frame, Selke scored three goals and supplied nine assists for Hertha last season. Not only can he score, hold the ball up, link play and shoot from range but his sudden burst of pace and strength in the air make him an all-day threat for the defenders.
Add that to his boundless stamina and work rate combined with his dribbling and creativity, he could be an interesting signing for West Ham.
Selke is one of the best strikers in the Bundesliga when playing with his back to goal and he could simply be the perfect candidate to cover and compete with Haller at the London Stadium. All in all, the German would truly bolster West Ham’s striking options.
Selke has played in Germany so far in his career and at 24, he could be open to a fresh challenge. And a move to the Premier League to play for Pellegrini’s West Ham should be too much to turn down.
