Why Watford should make a move for Robin Quaison in January

Back in January 2017, the Birmingham Mail had claimed Watford were interested in signing forward Robin Quaison, who was then playing for Palermo in the Serie A. However, a deal didn’t go through and he left for Mainz instead.

Since joining Mainz, Robin Quaison, 26, has played 74 games across all competitions, scoring 17 goals. He had the best season in his career last time out, scoring nine goals in all competitions for the German club. The Sweden international has hit the ground running in the new Bundesliga campaign and has three goals in six games.

With Quaison performing very well for both club and country at the moment, Watford must reignite interest in him when the transfer window reopens in January.

Things are currently bleak for Watford fans as their club sit rooted to the foot of the Premier League table with no wins from eight matches, a goal difference of -16 and a new manager already in the dugout. Quique Sanchez Flores, who replaced Javi Gracia, is finding difficult to motivate his team.

So far, the Hornets have scored just four goals, conceded 20, including eight in one match against champions Manchester City, and kept just one clean sheet, suggesting their place in the Premier League could be in jeopardy come May. If Watford are to avoid relegation from top-flight, they need to spend heavily in January to reinforce almost every area of the squad.

Signing players in January are likely to be difficult, especially for a team that is rock bottom in the league. Nevertheless, Flores should strive hard for the players he wants in January to boost his squad and one area he must have at the top of his priority list is the striking department.

Skipper Troy Deeney is recovering from a knee injury, while the likes of Andre Gray and Danny Welbeck haven’t done much this season. Gerard Deulofeu and Roberto Pereyra have been the only bright sparks in the attack but they have just one goal between them. With that in mind, it is easy to suggest why the Hornets should go for Robin Quaison.

In Quaison, Watford would get a versatile attacker capable of playing on either wing and as a second striker. Blessed with a solid technique, vision and an eye for goal, he can breeze past players due to his agility and burst of acceleration and finish off a move. The Swede would undoubtedly bring pace, energy and purpose to the Hornets attack.

The 26-year-old is more than capable of creating opportunities for his teammates with his incisive passing and movement around the box. Furthermore, Quaison also likes to test the goalkeepers by hitting the ball with real venom from outside the box.
