Why Tottenham should sign Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho

According to a report in the ESPN, Barcelona’s Philippe Coutinho has been linked with a shock loan move to Tottenham Hotspur. With less than 48 hours left before the transfer deadline, this transfer might go down as one of the biggest surprises. Coutinho has been linked with a move to Arsenal as well.

The Brazilian enjoyed a fantastic Copa America campaign for Brazil after a turgid 18-month spell at the Nou Camp. The attacking midfielder was simply not able to recreate the form that saw him earn the move from Anfield and it looks a return to the Premier League is on the cards.

Coutinho played under current Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino during their spell at Espanyol many years back and the player could find himself reviving his career under his former manager, who is a fantastic coach.

Coutinho is still 27 and has his best years ahead of him. He could be a catalyst in handing Spurs a real title charge with a potential Champions League charge as well.

There has also been a report from the Independent suggesting that Spurs’ current playmaker, Christian Eriksen, is looking to move away and Manchester United are interested.

Coutinho would fill many of the gaps if Eriksen were to leave, as he’s also a creative midfielder and can get goals from the midfield while being capable of taking set-pieces.

Coutinho is more aesthetically pleasing though, as he’s a superior dribbler to Eriksen. However, the Tottenham man makes up for that with his craft and two-footed ability.

There’s really not a lot to separate the two as players with the major factor being that Eriksen only has a year left on his contract. Spurs recently built a new stadium which cost them a fortune and they would get a tidy sum from Eriksen’s sale before the European transfer window closes.

Mauricio Pochettino will be frustrated by the lack of signings in the last two windows, with Tanguy Ndombele being the only revelation. However, his presence will not be enough for a title push or to progress in the European competition.

Signing Coutinho will be a massive source of optimism in the upcoming season.
