Why Tottenham Must Avoid Signing West Brom Duo Jonny Evans and Jay Rodriguez

According to the Independent, Mauricio Pochettino is set to have at least £120m to spend on new players this summer as Tottenham Hotspur aim to strengthen the squad for next season.

The same report claims that Spurs are interested in relegation-threatened West Brom duo, Jonny Evans and Jay Rodriguez. The pair will be available for a cut-price deal as the Baggies prepare to drop into the second tier of English football.

Speaking about Evans first, the defender has a little over a season left on his current contract at the Hawthorns. West Brom did well to stave off Manchester City and Arsenal’s bids for Jonny Evans last year but he’ll be in high demand in the summer as the Midlands-based club are destined for the Championship next season.

The 30-year-old has been a mainstay for West Brom this season, clocking 29 appearances across competitions, scoring twice. He has a £3million release clause in his contract and with the Baggies preparing for life in the second tier, the Northern Irishman will be available for a cut-price fee in the summer.

Since joining West Brom from Manchester United in 2015, Evans has been really good. He has taken his game to the next level which he failed to do so under former United managers David Moyes and Louis van Gaal.

The 30-year-old is experienced, comfortable with the ball at his feet and is strong in the air. He exudes a calming influence on West Brom’s backline and his top-notch displays soon caught the eyes of Manchester City and Arsenal last summer.

He has been one of the Baggies’ most consistent performers in an otherwise mediocre season and is still rated highly across Europe.

Evans’ teammate Jay Rodriguez has also performed well this season. Rodriguez has put behind the injury concerns that halted his career at Southampton. This season, he has scored 11 times in 38 matches which is still not a healthy return for a striker who is at his peak.

At Southampton, under the guidance of Pochettino, Rodriguez earned an England call-up in 2013. However, recent injury nightmares and lack of form have seen the 28-year-old suffer a lot and last year, he decided to join West Brom from Southampton.

Although the move has worked well for Rodriguez, he is yet to hit the heights that made him such a fantastic player earlier.

Analysing both Evans and Rodriguez, I feel that Tottenham should not sign the duo in the summer transfer window. Spurs have a very good squad and while every manager remains keen on bolster the squad, Pochettino must simply dodge the double bullet.

Evans has been solid at the back in the last couple of years, while Rodriguez has slowly found his composure in front of goal after succeeding in keeping his injury problems behind. However, in all fairness, the duo simply won’t improve the current Tottenham squad.
