Why This Scottish Forward Should Snub Wolves And Join Sunderland Before Deadline Day

Why Striker Jordan Rhodes Should Choose Sunderland Over Wolves

Jordan Rhodes really is an enigma and someone who should have achieved so much more in the game and now the Sheffield Wednesday striker is wanted by Sunderland manager Simon Grayson.

A link with Wolves has already been revealed given that the club clearly feel they are missing another striker, something which could be seen as the missing piece of their own Championship title chasing puzzle.

It appears that the Black Cats have made enquiries about Rhodes’ availability though no official bid has been received by the Owls as yet. Despite a decent start, especially by the energetic Lewis Grabban and James Vaughan, the club’s need for more firepower up front was again the source of discussions after the horrible 3-0 reverse at Oakwell against Barnsley at the weekend.

Work is clearly going on behind the scenes at the Stadium of Light to bolster their squad before Thursday’s deadline, especially in forward areas and boss Grayson is thought to be an admirer of Rhodes, a player who is actually Sheff Wed’s record signing at £10million, though he has struggled to fit in at Hillsborough thus far.

Having scored only 5 goals in 25 appearances since his move from Middlesbrough, Rhodes finds himself down the pecking order in South Yorkshire. Although promotion-chasing Wolves would look like an obvious choice for him on paper, Rhodes would perhaps be better off on Wearside.

Sitting on the bench at Sheffield Wednesday and then sitting on the bench behind current first choice striker Leo Bonatini at Wolves are essentially the same thing for the player, regardless of where they each finish in the league.

At Sunderland though, Rhodes would be seen as the club’s main hope in front of goal and he can be this year’s Jermain Defoe, a striker the fans will idolise with time. That is precisely what Rhodes needs at this stage of his career.

The Scotland international needs a second wind essentially and Wearside could provide it. Having played for Boro, he knows the north east somewhat and would fit in easily. He hasn’t had that aura of being a feared striker since the 2014/15 season.

Back then he scored 21 goals in 45 league games for Blackburn Rovers and was much sought after, though since then, things have gone backwards. 16 goals came for Blackburn and Boro in 2015/16 and since then, he hasn’t scored more than 3 in the league for any club.

It should be all about him for the short to medium term and not his team. So a role as Sunderland’s main goal-getter would suit him much better right now.
