Why This Irish Defender, Though Perfect, Is Too Expensive For Leicester City

Jonny Evans Might Be A Perfect Choice For Leicester, But Is Too Expensive

Claudio Ranieri will forever be remembered for his fairy tale season at the King Power but Leicester City have already moved on and have managed to save their skins in the top flight. They are now looking to improve the squad to try and move back into the top half of the table next season.

They have a few holes to plug in their squad and one position Craig Shakespeare is determined to improve is his defence. The Foxes have been looking at some experienced defenders to add to their squad next season and one player linked with a move to the King Power is former Manchester United star, Jonny Evans.

After a strong season at the back for the Baggies alongside the experienced Gareth McAuely, Evans has suddenly become a top target for many clubs as Leicester City have already made a £15m bid for him which was rejected recently.

Having made 31 league appearances last season, the 29-year old Irish star is a no-nonsense defender who does not like to take risks in his box. He is smart and stays ahead of the game and his strength makes him an asset at the back. He is strong in the air and in hold up play. He is not afraid to put his body on the line and is a player who will improve the backline of the Foxes.

Wes Morgan, though has been decent, has looked shaky at times and at 33, may not be the first choice at the club for too long. The 32-year old Robert Huth may get another chance next season while Yohan Benalouane and Christian Fuchs are the only backups. Fuchs might keep his place on the wing, making Evans a necessity at the club.

However, reports have revealed that West Brom are ready to offer Evans a bumper new deal that will keep him at the club for at least three years. This will mean that Leicester City have to meet his £20m valuation this summer.

In this inflated market, it is hardly a price that should be frowned upon but for the Foxes, this might not be the smartest investment. They will fall into a search of another centre back in a year. With no young options in the squad, adding Evans will not change this situation. So if they are ready to pay £20m for a centre back, they are well advised to look at other players who are establishing themselves in England at the moment.
