Why Jack Wilshere Would Be Important For Arsenal This Season If He Stays Fit

Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal managed to take a point off Chelsea in the previous game of the Premier League campaign and the manager will be happy with the way his team is fighting back, after a less than impressive start to the league season. They also managed to get a victory in the League Cup and though it was only over Doncaster Rovers, it will have given the players a lot of confidence going into the rest of the season.

There were a few positives to take from the victory in the mid-week for Arsenal but none more than the form of midfielder Jack Wilshere.

The English midfielder was expected to be the next best thing in the country when he burst onto the scene more than five years ago. However, he failed to live up to the expectations of the French manager at the Emirates and was constantly missing out on first-team football, troubled by injuries one after the other. He spent the previous season on loan at the Vitality stadium, a season he spent with minimal injuries.

The 25-year old is can be one of the most error-prone players when it’s not his day, but against Doncaster, he made his first start in almost a year and a half in a Gunners’ shirt, and did not fail to impress.

Playing as a part of the midfield, Wilshere played a huge role in keeping the Rovers on their toes all night. He played a role in the only goal Arsenal managed to score on the night, and looked a player with decent confidence under his belt.

He has not been able to earn the trust of his manager and has constantly been linked with an exit, with reports claiming that he wants a move to West Ham United. However, his performance recently will not give Wenger a dilemma.

The manager seemed like he was ready to let the midfielder leave the club in the summer but the lack of options in this role along with injuries to key players, now makes Wilshere an important player for Arsenal.

Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsey should remain the first choice for Arsenal while Mohamed Elneny is the only other option available at the moment, considering Francis Coquelin is out on the sidelines due to injury. Santi Cazorla may also help them later in the season but Wilshere is a player who is ready for the biggest test, and if given confidence, he could turn into the player Arsenal need in the middle of the park.

He may not be an option in the Premier League but he can definitely be the saviour for the Gunners in the domestic cup competitions and may be even on Thursday nights in the UEFA Europa League.
