Why Drogba Is Wrong In Saying Aurier Joined The Wrong Team In Tottenham

Tottenham Hotspur made some late defensive signings in the summer transfer window and two of them, Aurier and Sanchez have already made their debuts for the club. They are expected to play huge roles in Tottenham Hotspur’s progress in four different competitions this season.

Spanish striker Fernando Llorente too made his first appearance for the club, against Dortmund last night and will get his chances slowly. But the hot-headed Serge Aurier, who landed in London for £23m after loads of speculations in the summer, is one player who is dividing opinions among the fans. Aurier was a wanted man in the transfer window but Spurs managed to lure him, just before the deadline day.

His disciplinary issues aside, Aurier is a player tailor-made for the English game and is surely going to be a huge player for the English side. But his compatriot and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba thinks otherwise.

Speaking in an interview recently, the record-breaking striker said that Aurier may have chosen the wrong club to move to in the summer. English giants Chelsea and Manchester United were also after his services and Drogba said, humorously, that he may have made the wrong move. But can Drogba be more wrong?

The 24-year old former PSG star is known for his aggressive approach and quality in attack. His strength and ability to read the game allow him to put in solid performances at the back. As a wing-back, there are very few players that can be more effective in England than Aurier.

Playing for a manager like Pochettino, the full-back is going to be given the confidence and the trust that he failed to earn in Paris. Though he may take time to settle in, he is going to love life at the Lane.

Both Chelsea and United needed a fullback in the transfer window and Antonio Conte had to settle for Davide Zappacosta late in the transfer window. The Italian star has already made a decent start to the campaign while United decided to stick with Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian as the only options for this role.

Spurs, on the other hand, lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City, who vacated a first-team place at the club. Kieran Trippier has done a decent job in his absence but it is hard to see the club win trophies with the English youngster starting regularly.

Aurier is an upgrade on Trippier and his experience at the highest stage will surely come in handy. But more importantly, Mauricio Pochettino’s approach to the game and his team selection is what that defies Drogba’s words.

The Argentine manager is not afraid of using youngsters in his first team and though the Ivorian has a few disciplinary issues, giving him the first team responsibilities might help him mature as a player. Surely, Drogba was wrong in his comments about this move.
