Why this £3m Rangers new signing has all the traits to be the next Gers captain

Share

Rangers recently completed the signing of Connor Goldson from Brighton and Hove Albion for £3m. Goldson, 25, has joined the likes of Allan McGregor, Scott Arfield, Jamie Murphy, Ovie Ejaria and Nikola Katic as new Rangers boss Steven Gerrard’s summer signings so far.

While discussing the signings he has so far made at Rangers, Gerrard dropped a big hint that Goldson could be the next Gers captain.

Fixing the defence should be a huge priority for Gerrard this summer, given Rangers’ woes at the back last season. The Light Blues conceded more goals than any of the other side which finished in the top six in the Scottish Premiership.

Goldson, who was a bit-part player for Brighton last season, brings leadership qualities and a lot of experience with him to Ibrox. Considering everything, should Gerrard hand Goldson the captain’s armband next season?

Goldson, 25, started his career at Shrewsbury Town and went on to make 120 appearances for the club before joining Brighton in the summer of 2015. In his first season at the Falmer Stadium, he helped the Seagulls to reach the Championship play-offs.

But he managed to play only 10 games the following season before being forced to undergo preventative heart surgery in February 2017.

After returning to fitness, the defender was restricted to just eight outings last season, with three of those coming in the Premier League as he found himself behind the centre-back pairing of Lewis Dunk and Shane Duffy.

Considering the formidable partnership which Dunk and Duffy built last season, it was understandable on manager Chris Hughton’s part to not disturb the pairing, which in turn resulted in limited game time for Goldson.

Goldson may not have played a lot of football in the last two years but he is someone, who will add a lot of value to the Rangers side. He would bring in a lot of physicality, power and pace to the Gers’ backline. A versatile defender, the 25-year-old can also play at right-back.

The towering centre-back, who stands at 6’3, is comfortable with the ball at his feet and is someone who relies on his ability to read situations.

A physically imposing defender with hard-tackling abilities, Goldson can take the captain’s armband from Lee Wallace, whose future at Rangers is in doubt after his verbal assault of then manager Graeme Murty towards the end of last season.

At 25, Goldson has his best years ahead of him. A preventative heart surgery may have hampered his progress but at Rangers, the defender can resurrect his career. Goldson’s experience and knowledge will certainly make a difference as the Gers look to end Celtic’s domination next term. Captain material? He seems like one!
