Why Swansea City’s Ki Sung-yueng Would Be A Brilliant Signing For Everton

According to Sky Sports, Everton are interested in signing Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yueng on a free transfer this summer.

The South Korean has been a regular for Swansea since arriving from Celtic back in 2012. However, his performances have seen a dip this season and he has scored 2 goals in 22 appearances this campaign as Swansea City continue to strive hard to maintain Premier League status.

Swansea had opened the talks with the player over a new deal but Ki’s reluctance to sign comes as a big blow as the midfielder looks to try a different adventure after spending six years at the Liberty Stadium.

Should Everton sign him at the end of the season, what would he offer to Sam Allardyce’s side?

Ki has been a permanent fixture for the Swans since 2012 and has earned a solid Premier League experience. He is neither a defensive midfielder nor exactly a playmaker but is a proper central midfielder with great positional sense and interception skills.

The South Korean sits in the middle of the park, keeps things simple and is a very good passer of the ball. He is one of those midfielders who love to keep the ball at his feet, recycle possession and quickly release in order to create opportunities.

Ki has good technique, vision and can find a player from any position. Apart from that, he brings a lot of energy and zest to the midfield and pops up with the odd goal. A decent goal-threat despite being a central midfielder, the South Korean is a solid player to have in the squad.

Currently, at Everton, Allardyce has the likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Idrissa Gueye and Tom Davies as options in central midfield. While Schneiderlin and Gueye are combative defensive midfielders, Davies is an adventurous player who is not effective while playing in a two-man central midfield.

Everton have lacked a midfielder capable of dictating terms, pulling the strings in the middle of the park and offering creativity. That’s one of the reasons why Wayne Rooney has been used in central midfield but the former Manchester United man has struggled royally. Gylfi Sigurdsson is not a central midfielder, while Davy Klassen’s Everton career has gone for a toss.

That leaves Allardyce short of options in the midfield. This is where Ki’s signing makes sense. A smart and effective midfielder, the South Korean would add a lot of steel and would offer dynamism to the midfield. He would provide depth to the Everton midfield and bring a lot of balance to the squad.

A fighter and a leader who steps up under pressure, Ki has been a full international for South Korea since 2007. He has enjoyed some gigantic highs in national colours, competing in two World Cups and winning a bronze medal at the 2012 Olympics.

All the experience of Ki donning the national colours for over a decade and playing regularly in the Premier League will come handy should Everton sign him from Swansea at the end of the season. He will surely improve Everton and would help them challenge for a top-6 finish next season.
