Why Should Tottenham Go All Out And Sign This Dutch Attacker (Not Janssen)

Share

Tottenham are still in shock after their side’s disastrous run during the final phase of last season, not only resulted in them missing out on the title but also finishing below their North London rivals Arsenal. The final match of the season proved to be the most humiliating as Newcastle annihilated Spurs 5-1. Georginio Wijnaldum scored two goals that day for Newcastle and if reports are to be believed the Frenchman is edging closer to a move to White Hart Lane. Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has done a wonderful job since taking over and 3rd place finish is evidence of  what Pochettino has achieved in only his second season with Tottenham.

Tottenham were by far the most entertaining team in the league last season. They enjoyed the best goal difference in the league, with the best scoring as well as defensive record. One criticism that was levied at Pochettino last season was that he didn’t have quality players to cover for first team starts once they got injured or were rested. He will be looking to get in quality reinforcements who can step in and play with the same energy and creativity that manager expects from his team.

Wijnaldum joined the Mapgies in a 14.5 million pound deal last summer, but may be keen to leave after seeing the club relegated to the Champions, especially now that he is entering the prime of his career at 25 years of age. The former PSV star had a mixed season at Newcaslte, scoring 11 times in 40 matches. He is a versatile midfielder who can play both off the left flank and a more central attacking position, similar to the position Christian Eriksen and Dele Alli usually take up.

One of the main reasons for the winless streak at the end of last season was the the suspension of both Dele Alli and Mousa Dembele. Having signing Victor Wanyama from Southampton, Tottenham have already addressed the need for another powerful central midfield player. Although Tottenham have plenty of attacking midfield talent in the shape of Christian Eriksen, Dele Alli, Erik Lamela and Mousa Dembele, they’re going to need more attacking depth to cope with the added pressures of Champions League football next season.

Not only would Wijnaldum challenge these players for a place in the side and provide cover for any injuries, he would also bring his own unique style and quality to the team. He is an excellent creative force with a calm head in front of goal, and crucially for Spurs, has the stamina to fit into Mauricio Pochettino’s high pressing style.

Providing Newcastle don’t hold out for too high a fee, Wijnaldum could prove to be an excellent addition at White Hart Lane, and could help them improve on their 3rd place finish last season.
