Sheffield Wednesday news: Should Wednesday sign Lee Cattermole?

Unlike Sheffield United, Sheffield Wednesday have struggled this season. Their season started terribly, with the club flirting with relegation and the Owls have still failed to hit expectations.

While they do sit 14th in the second tier, things could worsen and given their team sheet, it’s only a matter of time. A large number of their players are loan signings, with manager Steve Bruce calling up not one but six players from the youth squads.

However, to further add to their problems, the club’s midfield lacks experience and leadership. The likes of Sam Hutchinson, Joey Pelupessy, Kieran Lee, Barry Bannan, Almen Abdi and David Jones have failed to do as such.

This is a big surprise given that both Abdi and Bannan have played over 290 games in the Championship alone over the course of their career. They should be leading the team to bigger things, yet they have struggled to make any impact this season.

That’s exactly why the club should target Sunderland man Lee Cattermole. The 30-year-old has bags of experience like Abdi and Bannan, and can lead a team when required.

While Sunderland’s fall has been well documented, Cattermole’s leadership is one of the many reasons why the club has managed to do well this season.

The former Wigan Athletic star has formed a great partnership with new arrival Grant Leadbitter, ruling the Black Cats’ midfield this season. Moreover, under manager Jack Ross, the England international has flourished in a new role.

Ross has used Leadbitter as the holding midfielder and that has allowed Lee Cattermole to move further forward to great effect, scoring five key goals. This ability will prove to be crucial for Sheffield Wednesday.

The current Owls boss once managed Sunderland and more importantly, played a big role in bringing Cattermole over from Wigan Athletic. The two had a great relationship during Bruce’s three-year spell with the club, and a reunion makes the move even more probable.

What could prove to be problematic is the fact that Sunderland may not let a key star leave in the summer. But if Bruce and Sheffield Wednesday somehow manage to get the move done, they would get a midfield general that they desperately require.
