Why Signing Jack Hendry Would Help Rangers Steal A March On Celtic

Rangers are reportedly thinking of swooping to sign Dundee’s young defender Jack Hendry in the January transfer window.

The Govan club are very keen to strengthen their squad considerably in January as they battle to beat Aberdeen to 2nd spot and make inroads into Celtic’s continued lead at the top of Scottish football.

Caretaker manager Graeme Murty has spoken in recent days about a growing list of transfer targets being compiled by Director of Football Mark Allen, with a mixture of youth and experience wanted in order to cover off both the imminent need for on-field improvement and the need to protect Rangers’ near future too.

Hendry now appears to be right near the top of the wanted list at Ibrox, though they have essentially joined Celtic in chasing him given that Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers has hardly been circumspect about his admiration of the defender.

It is agreed pretty much universally that Hendry has been the standout player at Dens Park this season, with his performances making him known to more than just the Light Blues scouts. Representatives from Crystal Palace, Newcastle United and Crystal Palace have all been there to see Hendry and it seems a move is imminent for the former Wigan player.

The Premier League would, of course, be high in Hendry’s considerations, however, it is often the case that talent gets swallowed up there but not used correctly. The next natural step is for Hendry to join one of the Old Firm and of course, he is a Glasgow boy himself.

Rangers have an abundance of centre-backs just now with David Bates, Bruno Alves, Fabio Cardoso, Ross McCrorie and Danny Wilson all on the books. However, Alves will not be there forever and neither will Wilson, while McCrorie seems to love playing in a deep-lying midfield role.

Not only then is there a vacancy for another centre-back at Ibrox, but Rangers absolutely need to take care of the next few seasons and not just January to May 2018. So players of Hendry’s age and ability must be very high on the wanted list.

The minimum expected of Hendry in the next three years is that he belongs at the top of the Scottish Premiership; the most being that he will be the lynchpin of Scotland’s defence and a player who belongs in the Champions League.

Dispensing with all the intricacies and details then; Hendry would be a good signing for Rangers simply because they need to steal a march on Celtic in the future.
