Why Rangers must do everything in their powers to sign this 33-year-old Premier League veteran

Why Rangers must go all out to sign Steve Davis from Southampton

According to reports, Scottish outfit Rangers are interested in re-signing Southampton skipper Steven Davis this summer.

Davis, 33, enjoyed a highly successful four-year stint with the Rangers from 2008-2012, winning three Scottish Premiership titles, two Scottish Cups and three Scottish League Cups.

In 2012, the Northern Ireland midfielder joined Southampton and has been a mainstay in the team since then. However, he endured an injury-hit campaign last term, playing just once under Mark Hughes since February.

With just one year remaining on his contract, Southampton should cash in on Davis this summer. And Rangers must do everything to bring the 33-year-old back to Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard has wasted no time in reshaping his squad ahead of his debut managerial season. Under Gerrard, the Gers have already wrapped up deals for Connor Goldson, Ovie Ejaria, Jamie Murphy, Jon Flanagan, Nikola Katic, Scott Arfield and Allan McGregor as they look to improve on last season’s third-place finish.

And now the 38-year-old manager has set his sights on Davis. If he can bring the central midfielder to Ibrox, he could be his best signing yet.

Davis has been a favourite amongst the Southampton fans for his tenacity and high work-rate. The 33-year-old has been a regular for the Saints, however, in recent times his game time has been limited by both injuries and other players being in favour.

The Northern Irishman may be 33 but his performances at Southampton continue to be top-notch. Davis has played across a number of positions during his time at St.Mary’s. The former Aston Villa man can play as a defensive midfielder and in attacking roles but he thrives in a box-to-box midfield role.

A move to Rangers could indeed materialize, with Stuart Armstrong joining the Saints from Celtic earlier this week. And with just 12 months left to run on Davis’ contract, Southampton must sell him this summer instead of losing him on a free transfer.

Rangers already boast plenty of central midfield options, which include the likes of Ross McCrorie, Jordan Rossiter, Ryan Jack, Andy Halliday and two new signings Ovie Ejaria and Scott Arfield.

But Davis’ quality remains unparalleled and although the Northern Irishman is 33, he could bring in some much-needed experience and winning mentality at Rangers.

Having played at Ibrox earlier, Davis must be open to the prospect of joining Gerrard and his revolution at Rangers.
