Why Nottingham Forest must splash the cash to land this £6.5m-rated 32-goal attacker

Championship outfit Nottingham Forest are interested in signing Peterborough United striker Jack Marriott, according to reports from the Nottinghamshire Live.

The English forward has attracted the interest of several clubs, following his great displays for the League One outfit last season. It has been claimed that as many as eight clubs, including Premier League side Crystal Palace and Forest’s Championship rivals Leeds United are keeping tabs on Marriott.

Forest, who finished 17th in the Championship table last season, have already kicked off their summer transfer window with the signing of veteran defender Michael Dawson on a two-year deal. They are also understood to be close to completing a club-record €15m deal for Benfica midfielder Joao Carvalho as well.

Daryl Murphy managed 7 goals but at 35 years of age, he cannot be expected to deliver the goods on a regular basis. Young prospect Ben Brereton and Greek forward Apostolos Vellios were inconsistent as well. As a result, it is somewhat necessary for Forest to add more firepower upfront before the start of the season.

Based on his performances last season, Marriott could prove to be the ideal solution for the club. The 23-year-old, who rose through Ipswich Town’s academy, starred for Peterborough in the 2017/18 campaign.

He managed 53 appearances in all competitions, scoring 32 times, with 27 of those coming in the league. He also bagged 5 goals in 6 FA Cup games as the League One side made it to the 4th round of the domestic competition.

The diminutive Englishman is strong, possesses good pace, and is a proven lethal finisher in front of goal. Marriott has it in him to be at the right place at the right time – a very important quality of a striker.

Marriott, who was playing non-league football not very long ago, has shown great grit and character to become League One’s top goalscorer last season. His natural abilities on the field, coupled with his strong mentality are likely to take him forward.

And that is exactly why Nottingham should make a move for him at the earliest. Marriott might not possess Championship experience but he has all the necessary ingredients to make it big at this level. With Peterborough demanding £6.5m for his services, the Reds should act quickly and beat the other suitors to Marriot’s signature.
