High-flying Premier League side Manchester City have a lot to be happy about in the current season (barring the terrible loss to Wigan Athletic, perhaps) but it is becoming increasingly tough for people to not be impressed by their starlet Angus Gunn, who is currently serving a loan spell with Championship side Norwich City.
He joined the Canaries on a loan deal last summer and that will soon be coming to an end. However, it does bring up the question of whether or not the club should offer him a permanent deal.
There is no doubt that the fans, as well as Daniel Farke, want him to stay. The 22-year-old has been in sensational form for the club this season and even though Norwich have struggled on certain occasions, Gunn has hardly ever let them down. In fact, his display against Chelsea was probably something that people will not forget too easily. At first, he kept the celebrated Blues attackers at bay and was responsible for the 1-1 draw.
However, in the penalty shootout that followed, Norwich were beaten 5-3. The Blues might have won the game that night but Gunn won the hearts of all the supporters for his hard work.
Having emerged from Manchester City’s academy, this is his first foray in garnering valuable playing experience and yet, it feels like he has been on the field for years now. Blessed with quick reflexes and feet, Gunn has displayed exceptional shot-stopping abilities in the Norwich goal.
There was a time in October when he even helped them establish a new record of maintaining 5 clean sheets consecutively. Until now, he has maintained 12 clean sheets for the club, which is quite commendable.
He is the son of Norwich legend Bryan Gunn and if his performances are anything to go by, they show that he can truly live up to his father’s legacy. Now, it comes as no surprise that the Canaries should do everything they can to keep him at the club.
However, convincing Manchester City to permanently let go of a player as promising as Gunn will prove to be a cumbersome task. The cash-rich club have always been accused of buying players and not developing them and they stand a chance to do just that with Gunn.
City could use another goalkeeper in the ranks as well. Ederson Moraes has done a brilliant job for the club but Gunn could be utilised as the second-choice keeper by Pep Guardiola. It remains to be seen how this situation will play out but there is no doubt about the fact that Gunn is earmarked for a bright future.
