Man Utd’s goalscoring woes would come to an end if Solskjaer signs this 23-year-old setting the Ligue 1 on fire

Why Moussa Dembele would be a smart fit at Manchester United

Back in July, a report from the Guardian had claimed that Manchester United were interested in signing Lyon striker Moussa Dembele. However, a deal didn’t go through during the summer transfer window.

Moussa Dembele, 23, first made a name for himself in England his time at Fulham, before moving north of the border to score goals for fun at Celtic.

After two fruitful campaigns at Parkhead, he moved on to Lyon last summer and enjoyed a fantastic debut season in France, scoring 20 goals in all competitions.

The Frenchman has hit the ground running in the new Ligue 1 campaign as well, bagging five goals in four games thus far. Given the rollicking start he has enjoyed for Lyon in 2019/20, should Manchester United revive their interest in Dembele during the January transfer window?

Absolutely! Romelu Lukaku did not convince Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford that he is the man to lead the line going forward, despite scoring 42 goals across his first two years at the club.

The Belgian fell out with Solskjaer during the first few weeks of his tenure and the United manager decided to sell him to Inter Milan. The Norwegian tactician wasn’t convinced with Alexis Sanchez as well, allowing him to leave to Inter on loan, though.

That has left Solskjaer with just Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and 17-year-old Mason Greenwood as striking options. Predictably, the Red Devils have found scoring goals a tad tough after the 4-0 thumping of Chelsea in their season opener.

Having such few striking options for what is set to be another gruelling season could be disastrous, thus, bringing in a new striker would make complete sense.

And the Red Devils should go for Moussa Dembele. At 23, Dembele is among the most well-rounded young strikers in Europe – a ruthless finisher who can press in unison with his teammates when out of possession; combining slick movement with intelligent link play.

Blessed with pace and power in abundance, the Frenchman is also strong in the air and can hold the ball in congested areas.

The 23-year-old is comfortable drifting wide to create space for others through the middle, and such kind of fluidity and interchange would make him an asset at Old Trafford. Plus, Dembele’s pace, robustness and movement would make Solskjaer’s United more potent during counter-attacks.

Verdict

Dembele can play the kind of high-octane, intense-pressing game that Solskjaer wants his United team to play. He is maturing into a capable No. 9, something Solskjaer’s squad lacks.

It’s a no-brainer for the Red Devils to plot a January swoop for the pacey Frenchman.
