Why Matty Cash would be a fantastic signing for Everton

According to The Sun, (h/t Nottingham Post), Everton are weighing up a £12million bid for Nottingham Forest star Matty Cash when the transfer window reopens in January.

The same report adds that the Toffees are going to face stiff competition from Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Southampton in the race to sign the 22-year-old, who has been one of the driving forces behind Forest’s promising start to the campaign.

Essentially a versatile midfielder by trade, Cash has successfully transformed into a right-back to cope with injuries to Carl Jenkinson and Tendayi Darikwa. As a result, Everton have been impressed by the player’s versatility to play in different positions, as per The Sun, (h/t Nottingham Post).

Born in Slough, Berkshire, Matty Cash started his footballing education at Wycombe Wanderers before joining Nottingham Forest at the youth level in 2016.

The 22-year-old burst on to the scene in the Championship in the 2016-17 season and has since carved out a reputation as one of the best emerging versatile talents in the English second-tier.

Cash has made a total of 113 appearances for the Reds in all competitions till date, scoring and assisting 12 apiece. In fact, shifting to a new role has uncovered a new dimension in his game.

As per whoscored, Cash has averaged 2.8 tackles, 1.4 interceptions, 3.5 clearances, 0.9 crosses, 0.8 key passes and 1.1 long balls per game in the Championship this term, figures which speak volumes of his well-rounded attributes as a versatile midfielder and a full-back.

Cash has progressed by leaps and bounds at the City Ground over the past few seasons and Everton have every reason to look at him as a player who could offer some much-needed cover in multiple areas of the pitch.

Verdict

With Seamus Coleman well past his prime and a permanent transfer for Monaco loanee Djibril Sidibe yet to be finalized, Everton are in need of freshening up their options at right-back.

Signing Matty Cash would be a smart addition as a part of the club’s long-term plans moving forward.

Jonjoe Kenny, who is currently on loan at Schalke, will be back in the Toffees’ setup next summer but that is unlikely to jeopardize Cash’s role in the squad, given his versatility to play as a winger and a box-to-box midfielder.
