Why Manchester United spending big on this Spanish magician would help them bridge the gap between Man City

Manchester United Opinion: Will Saul Niguez be a good fit at Old Trafford?

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has lost just once since replacing Jose Mourinho in December. In the Premier League, the Reds dropped points for the first time under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in a surprise 2-2 draw with Burnley at Old Trafford at the end of last month.

While Manchester United have performed extremely well to enter into the top four, Solskjaer’s men, in reality, remain 14 points behind league leaders Manchester City and second-placed Liverpool with 12 games left to play.

Solskjaer, who won 12 trophies as a Manchester United player under Sir Alex Ferguson between 1996 and 2007, must help the Red Devils to finish inside top four, and challenge for the FA Cup and the Champions League.

But the Norwegian has already painted a picture of his vision to executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward of how Manchester United should look next season.

There is a big gulf between Manchester United and the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool, and it’ll take some heavy, planned spending in the summer to bridge that gap. The Red Devils need a top centre-back despite handing Phil Jones a new contract. A midfielder should also be in the shopping list following the departure of Marouane Fellaini in January.

That said, United must target Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez in the summer.

Saul Niguez, 24, has been a valuable piece of Diego Simeone’s jigsaw for the last couple of years now, showing his worth in his play with vital goals. The Spaniard has had his fair share of injury problems this season, yet, continues to be a vital cog of Atletico Madrid.

United are in need of a central midfielder, with the signing of Fred last summer proving to be a flop thus far. Nemanja Matic has entered his 30s, while Ander Herrera is out of contract at the end of the season. With Fellaini gone too, there is certainly room for the signing of Saul Niguez.

Saul Niguez

Saul can play in a number of positions across the midfield and though he is not known specifically for his goalscoring exploits, he is capable of using his wand of a left foot when he wants. The Spanish international is a tireless worker and can break the opposition’s play with his tacking skills. He would really help take United to another level with his dynamism and drive from the middle of the park.

Conclusion

Saul is just 24 and has a lot of scope for development. He has the tools to succeed at a big club like Manchester United.

Hence, the Red Devils should break the bank to sign Saul from Atletico Madrid in the summer. The 24-year-old would be a statement signing ahead of the 2019/20 campaign.
