Why Manchester United must accept David De Gea’s demand for wages worth £350,000-a-week

David De Gea has reportedly demanded wages worth £350,000-a-week to stay at Manchester United. The colossal goalkeeper has attracted attention from a host of potential suitors in the last couple of seasons but Real Madrid have continued to be steadfast in their approach to sign him.

They still have an interest in him but United have always been adamant about not wanting to sell him. However, the club will now have to nearly double his salary to ensure he stays back at Old Trafford.

One might call it an audacious or outrageous request but to be very fair, De Gea deserves every single penny of it and United must do everything they can to give him what he wants.

At a time when players like Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez are receiving similar packages despite making limited impact on the field, it is baffling as to how United have not yet increased De Gea’s wages to show how much he means to the team.

Old Trafford’s beloved ‘flying Spaniard’ has been a constant since the days of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson and he is undoubtedly an iconic figure at United.

In fact, he is one of the top contenders to don the captain’s armband once Michael Carrick steps down and as far as his influence is concerned, one just needs to watch a Manchester United game to understand what he means to the squad. Time and again, De Gea’s spectacular saves have helped the Red Devils win games and to be very honest, they would not be where they are today had it not been for the sensational shot-stopper.

If they refuse to increase his wages and De Gea joins Real Madrid, United could either use Sergio Romero or purchase a new goalkeeper. But seeing them in the place of De Gea will not bode well for a lot of fans, who are all now used to a feeling of calmness and reassurance that comes with seeing the Spanish superstar in action.

He is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world at present and United will be very foolish to deny his request – which is not extravagant by any measure.

We are living at a time when price tags are inflated and if a recent January arrival like Sanchez can earn £350,000-a-week and if a player as weak as Pogba earns £290,000-a-week, then De Gea is absolutely right in asking for similar wages, especially since he earns just £200,00-a-week. A player of his stature certainly deserves to be on par with the highest paid players in the team and United must definitely accept his demand.
